ANNAPOLIS, Md.- Penn State men's gymnastics takes second place at the Navy Open with its team score of 395.450. The Nittany Lions had two of the top finishes on the all-around. Junior Michael Jaroh won the all-around with a score of 80.950 and Michael Artlip came in third with a score of 77.00.
Head coach Randy Jepson said "It was rough day for us today, we missed 11 routines. It was a good day in terms of experience and getting some guys in different events."
Jaroh had another standout performance on rings taking first in the event with a 13.800. He also earned a second-place finish on parallel bars with a 14.000 result. Jaroh had a career best on floor exercise with his score of 13.400 to round out his day at the Navy Open.
Artlip joined Jaroh on the all-around podium in third place with another solid vault showing, earning a score of 14.350. The duo of Michaels qualify for the USA Gymnastics Winter Cup in February.
"It was really good to have two guys qualify for the Winter Cup next month with Michael Jaroh winning the all-around and Michael Artlip placing third," said Jepson.
Matt Cormier brings home another championship on vault, nearly reaching his personal best with a 14.750 mark. This is the captain's second first-place finish on vault this season.
Sophomore Josh Karnes nailed his routine on parallel bars, earning himself a person best mark of 14.350 while also taking first place.
Matt Underhill continues to succeed on vault improving his score each week. In today's competition, the freshman earned his best score thus far with a 14.500, tying him for second place.
Karnes and Ian Raubal notched top five finishes on high bar for the Nittany Lions. Karnes scored a 13.700, good for a second-place podium spot. Raubal earned a 13.350 landing him in fourth place.
Penn State impressed on vault, parallel bars and high bar, earning its highest team scores yet this season. The Nittany Lions scored a 72.150 on vault, 66.600 on parallel bars and 64.550 on high bar for team season highs.
