ERIE, Pa.- The No. 12/11 ranked Penn State women's ice hockey team secured the series sweep of Mercyhurst by a score of 3-2 in overtime on Monday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- No goal was scored until the third period when Kiara Zanon scored her third goal of the series 5:48 into the third period while the team was shorthanded to put Penn State ahead 1-0.
- Mercyhurst answered three minutes later off a power-play goal by Lilliane Perreault to even the score at 1-1, 8:01 into the frame.
- The Lakers would then take a 2-1 lead 15:36 into the third period off an unassisted goal by Megan McKay.
- With 21 seconds remaining in the period, Tessa Janecke found the back of the net off feeds by Rene Gangarosa and Kiara Zanon to even the score up at 2-2.
- Janecke nailed the game-winner 22 seconds into overtime off assists by Izzy Heminger and Kiara Zanon to secure the 3-2 victory and the series sweep.
GOALTENDING
- Goalie Josie Bothun made 22 saves on 24 shots and allowed two goals.
GAME NOTES AND STATS
- Kiara Zanon tallied her 12th multi-point game with a goal and two assists.
- Janecke recorded her fourth multi-goal game of the season.
- The Nittany Lions fired a total of 33 shots on goal.
- Penn State leads the CHA with 17 points with an 8-1-1 record in conference play.
- This is the Nittany Lions 18th win of the season which ties a program record for most wins in a single season.
