Women’s Basketball Falls 81-75 in Overtime at Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich.– Penn State women's basketball (13-12, 4-10) fell 81-75 in overtime to Michigan State (13-12, 5-9) Sunday afternoon at the Breslin Center. The Lady Lions held the lead twice in the overtime period off a three-pointer and jumper from Shay Ciezki, but the Spartans ended the game on a 10-3 run.
 
Penn State had a two-point lead under two minutes left in regulation, but back-to-back Michigan State layups pushed it ahead. The Lady Lions held the Spartans scoreless the rest of the way, including a block by Taniyah Thompson on a three-point attempt right before the buzzer. Leilani Kapinus hit two free throws with less than a minute left to tie up the game.
 
The Lady Lions and Spartans each put up 17 points in the opening quarter. Six Penn State players contributed baskets.
 
Michigan State held Penn State without a basket over the first four minutes of the second quarter for a 9-0 run, but the Lady Lions responded with their own 11-0 run after a layup from Kayla Thomas and three-straight three-pointers from Makenna Marisa, Thompson and Ciezki. The Spartans then followed with a 7-0 run for a 34-31 lead at halftime.
 
Once again, Michigan State opened the third quarter on a run, 10-2. The Lady Lions responded as well, ending the quarter on a 12-0 run. Kapinus converted an and-one on a layup, Ciezki hit a three, Marisa produced a layup in transition and then a jumper and Ali Brigham finished it off with a layup.
 
 
NOTES

  • Leilani Kapinus recorded her fifth double-double of her career and second this season with 10 points and 11 rebounds as well as four assists, a block and a steal.
  • Marisa produced a game-high 22 points, her 35th 20-point game of her career and 88th double-digit game.
  • She also finished with seven boards and five assists.
  • Ciezki was in double figures for the 15th time this year with 12 points, went 3-6 from three and had three dimes and two assists.
  • Alexa Williamson was the fourth Lady Lion to have 10+ points with 11 on 5-6 shooting from the field along with six rebounds.
