No. 10 Women's Ice Hockey Travels to Syracuse for CHA Series

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The 10th-ranked Penn State women's ice hockey team hits the road on Friday to begin a two-game series at Syracuse to begin its final four-game road stretch to wrap up the regular season.

HISTORY

  • This will be the 46th meeting between the two teams as the Orange lead the series 30-7-8 with Penn State taking the last two games on Dec. 3 and 4 by scores of 4-0 and 11-3.

SCOUTING THE SYRACUSE

  • Syracuse has eight players on the team that register double digit points this season.
  • Leading the way for the Orange is Lauren Bellefonte with eight goals and 18 assists.
  • The Orange enter the series with a 9-18-2 overall record and 6-5-1 record in the CHA.
  • Syracuse is coming off a loss and tie against Mercyhurst that came on January 28-29 by scores of 1-6, and 1-1. 
  • In net for the Orange stands Arielle DeSmet who has played and started in 27 games this season and has a record of 7-18-2 and GAA of 2.94. 

HAVE A COUPLE DAYS MACKAY!

  • Graduate student Eleri MacKay tallied three power-play goals in the Nittany Lion's last series against Lindenwood.
  • She notched four goals and two assists during the two-game stretch as she tallied three points in each game.
  • MacKay was named CHA Forward of the Week for her play against Lions.
  • The Brookfield, Wisc. native currently has nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points which is tied for third on the team. 

ZANON BREAKS MORE RECORDS

  • Junior Kiara Zanon broke two program records following game one of the Lindenwood series on Friday night.
  • Zanon broke the single-season program record for goals in a season with 21 which passed former teammate Natalie Heising.
  • She also passed her own single season record for points as she hit her 41st after Friday's game against Lindenwood.

SITTING ON TOP OF THE POLLS

  • Penn State has been ranked in the top 15 in the USA Today/USA Hockey national polls for 19 of the 20 weeks this year.
  • The Nittany Lions moved up two slots in the USCHO poll as they moved up to no. 10. 

HOLDING STRONG A TOP THE CHA STANDINGS

  • Following the two-game sweep of Lindenwood, the Nittany Lions have pulled eight points ahead of Mercyhurst and Syracuse with 21. Penn State currently holds a CHA record of 10-1-1.
