Men's Lacrosse Hosts Lafayette in Season Opener Saturday at Holuba

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State men's lacrosse opens its 2023 campaign on Saturday afternoon by hosing Lafayette. First faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Holuba Hall.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Penn State leads the series 2-0 as they last defeated the Leopards in the 2022 season by a score of 20-15 on February 5, 2022. This will the third game of the series between both teams.

SCOUTING LAFAYETTE

  • Lafayette finished last season with a 4-11 overall record and a 1-7 record in Patriot League play.
  • The Leopards do return junior Peter Lehman who was the team's leading point-getter last season as he tallied 34 goals and 21 assists for 55 points.
  • In net, stands Gabe Cummins who started in nine games last season and tallied a GAA of 13.14 and record of 4-6.

TEAM CAPTAINS

  • Penn State head coach Jeff Tambroni named Grant Haus, Jack Traynor and Brett Funk as team captains for the 2023 season.
  • Traynor and Funk are entering their fifth seasons as Nittany Lions while Haus is in his senior year at Penn State.
  • The three have played in a combined 95 games at Penn State so far in their careers.

BUCCI Join's Coaching Staff

  • Head Coach Jeff Tambroni announced the hiring of Joe Bucci to serve as the team's second assistant coach.
  • Bucci spent the past six seasons at UMBC, where he helped the Retrievers' defensive unit establish itself as one of the best in the country.

SPECIAL JERSEY NUMBERS

  • Graduate student Brett Funk will wear the No. 11 jersey for the second time in his career.
  • The No. 11 is presented to a young man who has persevered in the face of adversity. The No. 11 jersey, worn by Michael Jacober, 2002-05, has become symbolic of the strength and compassion of the 2005 Penn State lacrosse team who rallied around Michael after his family was tragically killed in a plane crash during his senior season.

  • Graduate student Jack Traynor will wear the No. 16 jersey for a first season.
  • Since 2016, to a senior who best represents the "Heart of a Competitor" in honor of our "Teammate for Life" Connor Darcey. Connor passed away tragically on June 12, 2015 in a car accident, prior to his redshirt junior season.
  • The No. 16 is passed down by the student-athlete who had the honor of wearing the No. 16 during the previous season.

TAMBRONI NEARING 100

  • Penn State men's lacrosse head coach Jeff Tambroni currently sits at 96 wins as a head coach at Penn State.
  • He is four wins shy from 100 at Penn State which would make him just the second Penn State men's lacrosse head coach to surpass that mark.
  • Previous head coach Glenn Thiel is the only other Nittany Lion lacrosse coach to surpass 100 wins at Penn State.

USING THE TRANSFER PORTAL

  • In the 2023 season the Nittany Lions added four transfers to the roster for the season.
  • Brent McVicker, Chase Mullins, Kevin Winkoff, and Chris Jordan are the four transfers who joined the Nittany Lions this year.
