UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams began their post season runs by traveling to Lafayette College on Saturday, March 11 for NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals. They faced the top fencers from all 13 Mid-Atlantic/South schools: Drew, Duke, Farleigh Dickinson, Haverford, Lafayette, Princeton, North Carolina, Penn, Wagner, NJIT, Stevens Tech, and Johns Hopkins.
Arwen Borowiak and Kateryna Chorniy led the Lions today as they both took home second place in their respective weapons, men's foil and women's epee.
Aidan Johnson finished close behind Borowiak in seventh place with Caiden Cannon at 18th and Donavyn Martinez tying with Josh Schaefer of NJIT for 26th place. Ryan Griffiths finished in fifth place in men's epee, Mitchel Bekker came in 15th and Devin Tafoya at 24th. In men's sabre, Clement Perrier also snagged fifth place. Nicholaus Zielinski came in 13th with Neil Lilov at 23rd.
Samantha Catantan narrowly missed the leaderboard as she finished fourth in women's foil. Arianna Proietti came in at 11th, Ariel Ratsep at 27th and Grace Seal at 29th. In women's epee, Jordan Liverant placed 10th with Jackie Khrol at 13th and Axelle Wasiak at 21st. Ola Strzalkowski led the women's sabre squad finishing in 12th place, while spring transfer Aurora Colter placed 19th with Mia Novick at 27th and Amelia Baker tied with Simona Nedyalkova of Wagner College for 32nd.
Chorniy, Catantan, Borowiak, Johnson, Perrier and Griffiths all automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships that will be held in Durham, N.C. from March 23-26. The NCAA committee will announce the rest of the qualified fencers on Monday, March 13.
