Fencing Closes Out NCAA Championship Weekend

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams had seven fencers compete at the 2023 NCAA Championships being held at Duke University. Four qualified from the men's team and three qualified from the women's team. 
 
Foilist Arwen Borowiak finished in eighth place, earning All-America status. As a junior, this is his third straight season as an NCAA qualifier and All-American. He earned All-America honors as a freshman with a sixth-place finish and then placed seventh at the end of his sophomore season. He won 12 out of 23 bouts throughout the two-day period to claim this accolade. 
 
In men's epee, Ryan Griffiths finished in 13th place with Clement Perrier coming in at 15th in sabre. Aidan Johnson finished right behind Borowiak at ninth in foil.
 
On the women's side, Samantha Catantan finished in 11th place in foil with Kateryna Chorniy at 15th place in epee and Ola Strzalkowski in 21st place in sabre. 
 
All fencers competed in between 21-23 bouts across the two-day competition period for each gender. As a team, Penn State came in eighth place out of 24 schools with a combined team score of 579. The University of Notre Dame claimed their third NCAA National Championship title with a team score of 1108. 
 
This concludes the Nittany Lions' 2022-23 season.
