No. 18 Women’s Lacrosse Hosts No. 10 Maryland For Thursday Night Big Ten Game

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- No. 18 Penn State women's lacrosse concludes its regular season home slate with a Big Ten match-up against No. 10 Maryland on Thursday night. The top-20 meeting is set to begin at 8 p.m. and will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
 
The Nittany Lions looks to bounce back from a tough road loss at Michigan on Saturday while snapping the Terrapins nine-game winning streak.
 
Penn State is ranked fourth in the Big Ten and 18 nationally in the IL/IWLCA Coaches Poll this week.

GAME PROMOTION

  • 'Pups at Panzer': Bring your dog to the game on Thursday night and receive a free dog bandana and $3 admission for owners. Dogs must enter through Gate A with vaccination forms and remain in a designated area throughout the game. For more information click here.
  • 'Wear White': Wear white to the game to support the Nittany Lions. Students that enter through Gate B will receive a free, white Penn State Lacrosse shirt.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State dropped a 10-8 road game at Michigan on Saturday, April 8. Despite a second quarter comeback and third quarter shutout, the Nittany Lions could not hold off the Wolverines. 
  • The Penn State defense only allowed two goals in the second half. They caused nine turnovers and scooped up 16 ground balls. 
  • Kristin O'Neill increased her scoring streak to 18 games with her 12th multi-goal outing of the season. She also posted three caused turnovers, three draw controls and one ground ball. 
  • Emma Kelly also recorded two goals to total eight on the season. 
  • Sammy Dupcak recorded two caused turnovers and five ground balls.

 
PENN STATE –MARYLAND SERIES

  • The Nittany Lions-Terps series dates back to 1973, with Maryland as one of Penn State's most-faced opponents. Maryland leads the series 44-16-1.
  • The most recent meeting in 2022 ended in a 13-6 Terps victory. Prior to that loss, the Nittany Lions won two-straight. 
  • Penn State is 9-11 in home games against Maryland. 
  • Head coach of Penn State Missy Doherty is a 1997 Maryland graduate. She helped the Terps to three National Championships. Doherty and Maryland head coach Cathy Reese played for three years on the same Maryland team.

 
SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS

  • Maryland is ranked 10th in the IL/IWLCA Poll this week and 2nd in the Big Ten Conference with its 12-3, 4-0 Big Ten record. 
  • In 2022, the Terps lost to Boston College in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament to conclude their season at 19-2, 6-0 Big Ten.
  • Eloise Clevenger set the single game assist record at Maryland in the win over Ohio State on Saturday, April 8.
  • The Terps were selected as the Big Ten Preseason favorite this year.
  • Libby May, Abby Bosco, Shaylan Ahearn, Emily Sterling, Eloise Clevenger and Kori Edmondson have all claimed a Big Ten Player of the Week honor this season. Bosco earned Big Ten Defensive and IL/IWLCA Defensive Player of the Week along with teammates Clenvenger as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Ahearn as the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week.

 
NITTANY LIONS TO WATCH

  • O'Neill and Dupcak were named ILWomen Midseason All-American Honorable Mentions. This is O'Neill's second year receiving the distinction.
  • Sophomore defender Ellie Hollin was named the IL/IWLCA and Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week after leading the defense to a first half shut out in a 13-3 win over Ohio State (3/25).
  • Junior Gilmore was named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week and IL/IWLCA Co-Offensive Player of the Week this week (3/21) after her 10-goal performance last week. She posted four goals in a 13-12 win over Towson and six goals in a 16-14 win at No. 14 Princeton.
  • Junior co-captain O'Neill was named to the 2023 Tewaaraton Award Preseason Watch List
