Men’s Golf Tied for Second After Opening Day of Rutherford Intercollegiate

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's golf team is tied for second place in a tight team race while two Nittany Lions are in the top 10 and four are in the top 20 following the first two rounds of the 46th-annual Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State's Blue Course Saturday.
 
The Nittany Lions shot a 2-under, 282, in a rainy morning round to take a one-stroke lead in the team race heading into the second round. Penn State carded a 1-over, 285, in the afternoon as the rain cleared. The Nittany Lions sit at 1-under, 567, and in a tie for second place heading into Sunday's third and final round.
 
Valparaiso shot a blistering 10-under, 274, in the second round to surge into the team lead at 6-under, 562. The Nittany Lions are tied for second with Georgetown, with both team five strokes behind Valpo heading into Sunday.
 
Sophomore Jake Griffin carded an eagle and two birdies in the final 10 holes of his opening round to finish the morning with a 2-under, 69. He stayed steady with an even 71 in the afternoon and is tied for sixth through the opening day at 2-under, 140.
 
Junior James Allen started strong, firing a 2-under, 69, in the opening round. He followed that up with a 1-over, 72, in the second round and is tied for eighth at 1-under, 141, heading into Sunday.
 
Senior Jimmy Meyers had five birdies in his opening 18, finishing the morning round at 1-under, 70. He carded a 2-over, 73, in the afternoon to complete the opening two rounds at 1-over, 143, and in a tie for 16th place.
 
Senior Patrick Sheehan carded a 3-over, 74, in the morning round. He moved up nine spots in the afternoon thanks to a 2-under, 69, in the second round. He is tied for 16th heading into Sunday at 1-over, 143.
 
Freshman Billy Pabst Jr. shot a pair of 3-over, 74's, to sit tied for 39th at 6-over, 148, heading into Sunday's finale.  
 
Three Nittany Lions played as individuals in Penn State's home tournament. Junior Jud Langille and freshman Jack Zubkus both sit at 6-over, 148, and in a tie for 39th place. Sophomore Morgan Lofland is tied for 52nd at 8-over, 150, heading into Sunday's final round.
 
The Rutherford Intercollegiate concludes Sunday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start for the third and final round at Penn State's Blue Course. Live scoring will continue to be available on GolfStat.
