UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's ice hockey head coach Jeff Kampersal announced the additions of Brianna Brooks and Alva Johnsson to the 2023-24 roster on Friday afternoon.
Brianna Brooks – 5-9 Forward – Whitby, Ontario – All Saints Catholic Secondary School – New Hampshire
Brooks comes to Happy Valley from the University of New Hampshire where she played three seasons for the Wildcats. During her stint at UNH, she played in 87 games while accumulating 21 goals and 32 assists at forward. She was named Hockey East Player of the Week one during the 2022-23 season after a five-point weekend against Boston College which included her first career hat-trick. She sat tied for 12th in the Hockey East in points in 2022-23 with 21 off nine goals and 12 assists.
Kampersal on Brooks: "Brianna is a talented offensive player. She is a good skater, has vision, and does a good job setting up her teammates. She is motivated and has an opportunity to make a significant impact on our program."
Alva Johnsson – 6-0 Defense – Stockholm, Sweden – Leksands – LIU
Johnsson arrives to Penn State from Long Island University where she spent four years playing for the Sharks. During her career at LIU, she skated in 113 games while recording 22 goals and 30 assists as a defenseman. She was named captain during the 2022-23 season while she captured two NEWHA Defensive Player of the Week awards. She became one of two players in LIU history to play in 100 career games. In the 2021-22 season, she was a four-time NEWHA Defensive Player of the Week winner and named an ACHA/Krampade All-American Scholar. During her freshman season, she scored her first career hat trick and finished second on the team in goals with 12.
Kampersal on Johnsson: "I met Alva many years ago when I was working a camp in Sweden. She is a mature, grateful, team-first player. She has the ability to play both positions – D and offense. She has height, strength, and she is a worker. We are happy she chose to participate in Penn State's outstanding one year MBA program."
