West Point, NY – Penn State Men's Rugby traveled to Army this Saturday to take on the Black Knights in the first round of Rugby East conference play. In a match that a tough battle right up to the 70th minute, Army scored a few back to back tries to put the Lions away 26-6.
Army scored early off a few penalties, which allowed them into the Penn State 22m and they came away with a try when Penn State got the communication wrong and a missed tackle on the goal line opened up the scoring. Penn State responded quickly with a penalty from Stephen Hoey to close the gap, 7-3 in favor of Army. A few moments later another Army infringement led to a Penn State penalty, which Stephen Hoey brought the team within 1 point, 7-6 in favor of Army.
That is where the score stood right to the 70th minute. Both teams fought hard to create scoring opportunities, but defense was just too strong with neither team managing to come away with points in scoring opportunities. As the game was winding down Army was able to create some momentum and some scoring opportunities. Putting in 3 tries in the final 10 minutes and sealing the fate for Penn State.
A tough match that the Lions will certainly learn from and look to build moving into the next match against St. Bonaventure on 28 September at home in University Park. That match will kick-off at 1:00pm on West Campus fields, streamed live on Veo Live App.
