GREENSBORO, N.C.- Penn State men's soccer earns 2-0 road victory at UNC Greensboro. Despite being forced to play down a player for 80 minutes of the game, the Nittany Lions notched two goals to earn three points on the night.
Penn State improves to 5-1-2, 2-0 Big Ten.
Alex Stevenson scored the first goal of the game in the 36th minute and Quentin Flowers found the the back of the net in the 75th minute for the insurance goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
An early red card issued to Femi Awodesu forced Penn State to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
A free kick just outside the 18 gave the Nittany Lions a threatening scoring chance in the 36th minute. Matthew Henderson on the kick, lofted the ball to Stevenson who headed the ball past the Spartans' keeper.
Penn State owned a 1-0 lead after 45 minutes of play.
Second Half
Still down a man, the Nittany Lions continued to battle. UNCG managed an early threat with five shots and a corner kick in the opening 10 minutes.
Peter Mangione led Flowers with a pass to the open lane and Flowers nailed a shot past the keeper to the back of the net to give Penn State a 2-0 edge.
Despite offensive pressure from the Spartans, the Nittany Lions held strong and left the final score at 2-0.
OF NOTE
- Stevenson scored his second goal of the year as a defender and fourth of his career.
- Flowers' goal was the sophomore's first of his career.
- Kris Shakes earned his second consecutive clean sheet and third of the season. This is the 20th of his career.
- Samson Kpardeh made his first collegiate start.
