Penn State Cruises to Victory over St. Bonaventure to Begin the Season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State Nittany Lions Men's Swimming and Diving team turned in a dominant showing against St. Bonaventure in the first meet of the 2023-24 season, beating the Bonnies 212-86. 

Several Nittany Lions scored points to help Penn State glide to an opening afternoon victory.  

"From an energy and an effort standpoint, I'm pleased," said head coach Tim Murphy following the meet. "Our effort now needs to be translated into getting better at the way that we're doing things."  

Top Swims: 

Junior Victor Baganha was impressive winning the 50 free and the 100 fly in two dominant performances.  

Sophomore Mariano Lazzerini dazzled in the 100 and 200 breast, beating the competition and then some while posting some fast early season times.  

Sophomore Eduardo Cisternas also came off the blocks hot, winning the 1000 and 500 free. 

Matthew Bittner earned a pair of wins for the Nittany Lions in the 200 back and a close 200 IM victory.  

Relays: 

Penn State was able to sweep the 200-yard medley relay. The top team of Cooper Morley, Lazzerini, Baganha and Tommy Hurley finished in 1:27.62.  

In the 400-yard freestyle medley, Tylor Kim, Baganha, Jacob Oberle and Ben Musante set the pace with a 3:02.83. They were followed by Hurley, Lachlan Byrne, Morley and Sean Honey who finished with a 3:03.87 to take second place.  

Dives: 

Senior Kevin Sullivan highlighted the meet for the divers posting a PR in the three meter dive with a score of 353.93. 

Sophomore Hayden Elliot also shined for the Nittany Lions posting an impressive 347.70 to take first place in the one meter dive. He also finished second in the three meter dive with a 327.98.

The Nittany Lions will stay home next weekend when they take on the Navy Midshipmen in McCoy Natatorium at 11 a.m.
