ROSEMONT, Ill. – Penn State women's soccer graduate goalkeeper Katherine Asman garnered her second Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week award of the 2023 campaign, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
In last week's match against Ohio State, Asman was critical in propelling the Nittany Lions to their 13th consecutive unbeaten result of the 2023 campaign and second win in a row in Big Ten Conference competition as the Blue & White defeated the Buckeyes by a 2-1 tally. Asman, a native of Roswell, Georgia, logged 90 minutes played for the 10th time overall this season and fifth match in a row. She allowed a single Buckeye score and turned back four OSU shots on goal in the competition.
In addition to her strong showing against Ohio State, the veteran shot-stopper became just the fourth Nittany Lion in program history to join the program's esteemed 50-win club. Asman joined program legends Emily Oleksiuk, Britt Eckerstrom and U.S. Women's National Team starting goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher on the list. Asman's storied career in Happy Valley has culminated in a 50-16-8 overall individual record, good enough for a 0.730 overall winning percentage in her five seasons of appearances.
Following results last week across the Big Ten Conference, Asman moved into the top spot in the league in terms of goals-against average, surpassing Iowa's Macy Enneking by booking a 0.422 GAA through this point in the 2023 campaign. Asman has allowed the fewest goals in the league among routine starters, yielding just five opponent scores, while turning in a B1G-best save percentage of 0.886 this season after notching 39 saves. Her goals-against average and save percentage both rank eighth across all of Division I this season in addition to leading the B1G.
One of the most decorated goalkeepers in recent Big Ten Conference history, Asman hauls in her sixth weekly award from the conference office since her career began in the fall of 2018 in addition to the second B1G Goalkeeper of the Week nod in her graduate season. Asman's historic week of work saw her pick up the 117th all-time Big Ten Player of the Week accolade in the 30-year history of Penn State women's soccer. On top of her prior recognition on Aug. 22, she joins teammates and fellow captains Cori Dyke (Aug. 22) and Kate Wiesner (Sept. 19) as PSU's only three B1G weekly award recipients in 2023.
No. 4 Penn State women's soccer continues the grind of Big Ten Conference competition this week, as the Nittany Lions get set for their final extended road trip of the 2023 regular season. PSU kicks the week off against the Purdue Boilermakers on Thursday, Oct. 12, with a 7 p.m. kickoff from Folk Field in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Nittany Lions conclude their penultimate regular season match week with a nationally televised fixture in Evanston, Illinois, on Sunday, Oct. 15. Kickoff against the Northwestern Wildcats is slated for 5 p.m., with television coverage on the Big Ten Network.
