SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The No. 15/15 Penn State women's ice hockey team captured the opening game of CHA play at Syracuse with a 4-2 victory on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first period, Julie Gough scored her first goal of the season off feeds by Carrie Byrnes and Tessa Janecke 3:11 into the second period to put Penn State ahead 1-0.
- 11:59 into the frame, Leah Stecker added to the Penn State lead with her second goal of the season to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead.
- Syracuse scored their first goal of the game 2:37 into the third period to narrow the Penn State lead to 2-1.
- The Nittany Lions answered 6:41 into the period as Kendall Butze scored her first goal of the season while Penn State was short-handed to increase Penn State's lead to 3-1.
- Syracuse didn't back down as Darci Johal scored on the power-play to cut the Penn State lead to 3-2 with 41 seconds left to play in the game.
- Butze had the final say as she scored an empty-net goal with 16 seconds remaining in the third frame to secure the 4-2 victory.
GOALTENDERS
- Senior goalie Josie Bothun recorded 20 saves and allowed two goals to move her record to 2-6-1 on the year.

- Head coach Jeff Kampersal secured his 99th win at Penn State.
