VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Junior Michelle Cox (Allentown, Pa.) paced Penn State over the weekend at the Evie Odom Invitational securing her second top-10 finish in three tournaments this fall and the fourth of her career.
Cox tied for seventh with a 1-over, 211, highlighted by a 3-under, 67, in the opening round and an even-par, 70, on Sunday.
"I focused on my game plan all weekend and was able to keep myself in really good positions to score throughout all three rounds," mentioned Cox. "It was a really fun tournament for me and I enjoyed the weekend a lot."
"Michelle had an awesome tournament," added head coach Kristen Simpson. "She did a great job of staying patient this weekend and committing to her game plan."
Penn State finished tied for 13th in the 15-team field at 50-over, 890, with UCF (10-over) taking the championship five shots clear of Kent State (15-over) in second. Chattanooga (20-over), Furman (22-over) and Old Dominion (26-over) rounded out the top-5 for the week.
Penn State had its best round of the weekend on Sunday finishing 13-over, 293, a full 10 strokes better than Saturday's round.
Cox had 10 birdies over the weekend to pace the Nittany Lions while junior Drew Nienhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) added five en route to a 9-over, 219, finishing tied for 28th in the 84-player field.
"I thought the team bounced back today after a tough day yesterday, I liked how they kept grinding and fighting until the end," concluded Simpson.
In her first tournament of the year returning from an injury, senior Mathilde Delavallade (Royan, France) finished tied for 59th at 16-over (76-75-75).
Senior Carlota Garcia (Salamanca, Spain) and junior Jami Morris (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) rounded out the scoring for the week at 24-over and 32-over, respectively.
