ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State women's ice hockey team dropped the opening game of the series at Mercyhust on Friday night by a final score of 4-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless opening frame, Mercyhust tacked on three goals in the second period first with a power-play goals by Kaylee Mahoney 1:05 into the frame to put the Lakers ahead 1-0.
- The Lakers tacked on the second goal 6:14 into the frame off the stick of Sofia Nuutinen to give Mercyhurst a 2-0 lead.
- Then Vanessa Upson followed six minutes later with a power-play goal 7:02 into the frame to give Mercyhurst a 3-0 lead after two periods.
- Mercyhurst scored the final goal in the third period off a goal by Sydney Pedersen 12:44 into the frame to result in the 4-0 final score.
GOALTENDERS
- Senior goalie Josie Bothun recorded 17 saves and allowed four goals to move her record to 5-7-1 on the year.
- Mercyhurst goalie Ena Nystrom recorded 16 saves and captured the shutout win.
STATS AND NOTES
- Penn State drops its first CHA game of the season.
- Tessa Janecke had a successful day in the face-off dot winning 22 face-offs and losing just five.
- Penn State falls to Mercyhurst for just the third time in the last 10 match-ups.
