Lady Lions Travel to Nassau, Bahamas for Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Tournament

NASSAU, Bahamas.- Penn State women's basketball heads to Nassau, Bahamas for the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Tournament from Nov. 20-22. The Lady Lions are set to take on Oklahoma State in their first game at the tournament, with a set opponent already in place for their second game on Nov. 22, future Big Ten foe No. 10 USC. 
 
The Pink Flamingo Championship is a highly competitive tournament with teams that made NCAA Tournament runs last season such as Florida, Ohio State, Georgia, Purdue and East Carolina.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Lady Lions earned their fourth straight victory to open the season 4-0 for their fourth consecutive year. Penn State earned a 69-55 come-from-behind win at St. John's using a dominant second half shooting performance. 
  • After shooting only 38.5% in the first half, the Lady Lions came out of the halftime break juiced, outscoring the Redstorm 46-27 in the second half with 52.6% shooting from the field including 62.5% three-point shooting. Their second half rally led them to their third shooting performance above 50%, shooting a combined 50.8% from the field through four quarters and 60% shooting from behind the arc. 
  • Makenna Marisa contributed her 30th, double digit scoring performance of her career, adding a team high 15 points to the team's total. The senior+ entered double figures for the fourth consecutive game while also contributing five assist, one steal and one block. 
  • Ali Brigham had a stellar night on the floor, sinking seven of her 11 attempts for the field to total 14 points while adding two assists to the column. Her contributions on defense with six rebounds, two steals and two blocks rounded out her outing. 
  • Chanaya Pinto was the third Lady Lions in double figures, notching 12 points on a near perfect shooting percentage of 83.3%.
  • Leilani Kapinus was a force to be reckoned with on defense, contributing six rebounds, three blocks, three steals while adding four assists and six points on offense.
  • Penn State passed the ball well for the fourth game in a row with 18 assists. 
  • The team continued to thrive off of their depth, capturing 26 bench points to total 127 through four outings.
  • Penn State outrebounded its opponent for the fourth straight game. The Lady Lions grabbed 12 ORBs and 22 on defense for a team total of 34 to St John's 29. 

LADY LIONS IN THE RANKS 

  • Makenna Marisa sits sixth in the conference in scoring average (19.8) and third in total points scored (79) behind Caitlin Clark and Genesis Bryant. Marisa also ranks 17th nationally in total points.
  • Shay Ciezki ranks 25th in the Big Ten, averaging 11.8 points per game. Her total of 47 points through three games sits at a rank of 16.
  • The Lady Lions rank first in the conference in points scored with 361 through four games. Rutgers owns the next highest total at 341 in its five appearances. Penn State's 32.0 margin is good for fourth in the Big Ten. The team also sits fifth in the nation in total points.
  • Penn State's field goal percentage of 52.9% is third best in the conference and fifth best in the country along with its 45.9% from three-point range ranking them at sixth. The team's 39 three pointers made is at the top of the league and ninth in the national rankings.
  • The Lady Lions also lead the conference in assists with 86 total and blocks with 27. Their 86 assists places them fourth in the country and seventh in total blocks. 

2023-24 ACCOLADES

  • Marisa was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the second consecutive season. She also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten preseason team.
  • Owusu repeats on the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award Watch List. 

SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS

  • The Cowgirls are off to a 2-1 start to the 2023-24 season with wins against SIUE and New Orleans and a dropped game to Colorado.
  • Oklahoma State will have gone over a week since its last contest, a 86-75 loss to Colorado on Nov. 12. 
  • First year athlete Stailee Heard was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week after three outings as a Cowgirl. The freshman shot 71% from the floor with 22 of 31 shooting. Through three appearances, she averaged 16.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. 
  • Anna Gret Asi leads the team in total points with 57 giving her a 19.0 average. Her field goal percentage of 71.0% ranks her 19th in the nation.
  • The Cowgirls finished the 2022-23 season 21-12 after losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Miami.

PENN STATE – OKLAHOMA STATE SERIES

  • Monday's match up at the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship will only be the second all-time meeting between the two teams. Penn State owns the 73-54 victory on November 24, 2001 at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
  • After over two decades, the two teams will meet again.
