Women's Ice Hockey Seals Sweep of Lindenwood With Rousing 8-2 Victory

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo.- The Penn State women's ice hockey team sealed the sweep of Lindenwood with a rousing 8-2 victory on Saturday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Penn State scored the lone goals of the opening frame as Mya Vaslet struck first 2:39 into the period to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • Alva Johnsson followed suit in the second half of the period as she found the back of the net 11:30 into the frame to put Penn State ahead 2-0.
  • Lindenwood opened the second period with a power-play goal 54 seconds in off the stick of Morgan Neitzke to cut the Penn State lead to 2-1.
  • Less than a minute later, Leah Stecker fired her first goal of the night off assists by Maggie MacEachern and Stella Retrum to give the Nittany Lions a 3-1 lead 1:25 into the frame.
  • Retrum then switched from assist giver to goal scorer 5:10 into the period as she scored her second goal of the season off a feed by Tessa Janecke to give Penn State a three-goal lead.
  • Lindenwood countered 10:48 into the period as Olivia Grabianowski slipped a goal past the netminder to cut the Penn State lead to 4-2.
  • Penn State then closed the period with a pair of goals off the sticks of Maggie MacEachern, 11:52 into frame and another goal by Vaslet 15:17 into the period to put Penn State ahead 6-2 after two periods.
  • The Nittany Lions scored the only goals in the third period as Vaslet scored her third goal of the game 15:26 into the frame off an assist by Alyssa Machado to put Penn State ahead 7-2.
  • Lexi Bedier closed the game out 18:50 into the frame with her first goal of the night to secure the 8-2 victory.  

GOALTENDERS

  • Senior goalie Josie Bothun recorded 26 saves and allowed two goals to move her record to 5-6-1 on the year.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Mya Vaslet recorded her first career hat-trick.
  • This is the first time Penn State has scored eight goals since Oct. 7, 2016, when they won 8-1 against Union.  
  • Alyssa Machado and Tessa Janecke each had three assists on the night.
  • Penn State has won its last 10 contests against Lindenwood.

UP NEXT

  • Penn State will take a week off before returning to play on Friday, Nov. 17 when they travel to Mercyhurst to begin a two-game series at the Lakers. Puck-drop is set for 7 p.m.
