Women’s Basketball Welcomes Navy for Friday Night Clash at the Bryce Jordan Center

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State Lady Lions continues its season-opening home stand on Friday, Nov. 10 when they host the Naval Academy on Military Appreciation Night. Tip off in the Bryce Jordan Center is set for 5 p.m. The game serves as the first half of a doubleheader, the men are set to play Lehigh following the women's game at 7:30 p.m. The contest will be the first ever meeting between the Lady Lions and the Midshipmen.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State cruised to a 94-51 victory over Bucknell on Tuesday, November 7 at the Bryce Jordan Center.
  • Six Lady Lions scored in double figures: Shay Ciezki (18), Makenna Marisa (14), Kylie Lavelle (13), Tay Valladay (12), Moriah Murray (10) and Jayla Oden (10).
  • Lavelle shot a perfect 5-5 (3-3 3PT) as the Lions' shot 59.3% from the field and 48% from three-point range.
  • The Lady Lions turned defense into offense, scoring 31 points off 26 Bison turnovers.
  • The 43-point margin was the largest for the program since a 69-point win against Delaware State on Nov. 16, 2021.
  • Makenna Marisa moved into ninth-place all-time at PSU in career scoring with 1,799 points. 

THE TEAM

  • The Lady Lions return Makenna Marisa for her fifth season of eligibility as well as Leilani Kapinus, Shay Ciezki, Alli Campbell, Ali Brigham and Chanaya Pinto.
  • The team welcomes six transfers. Ashley Owusu comes after three seasons at Maryland and one at Virginia Tech, Tay Valladay spent two seasons at Marquette and two at Virginia, Kylie Lavelle played as a freshman at Drexel along with Moriah Murray who transferred mid-season last year, Jayla Oden joins from Illinois and Grace Hall spent one year at LSU and one at Wabash.

 
LADY LIONS IN THE RANKS AFTER GAME ONE

  • Shay Ciezki ranks tenth in the Big Ten in scoring after the first round of games during week one, scoring 18 points in her opening night. 
  • Kylie Lavelle's perfect game from deep places her at second in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (1.000).
  • Penn State scored the third highest points in its opening night with 94 points behind Maryland with 98 and Iowa with 102, giving the Lady Lions the third best margin in the conference.

2023-24 ACCOLADES

  • Marisa was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the second consecutive season. She also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten preseason team.
  • Owusu repeats on the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award Watch List.

SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN

  • Navy opened the 2023-24 season with 78-37 victory against Division III Susquehanna University.
  • Freshman Zanai Barnett-Gay paced the squad with her first double-double in opening night of her collegiate career. Her 18 points and 11 rebounds was a game high.
  • The Midshipmen are coming off of a tough 1-29 (1-17 Patriot) season in 2022-23.
  • Navy returns three of their four top scorers from a season ago: Sydne Watts (12.7), Maren Louridas (11.6) and Kate Samson (6.2).
  • Samson, a 6'4" center, led the team in blocks with 27 a season ago.

  • This is the first meeting between Penn State and Navy.
