UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams opened up NCAA dual meet season in Fairfield, Conn. at Sacred Heart University's Traditions Tournament. The Nittany Lions faced the men's and women's teams from Vassar, NYU, Princeton, NJIT and Sacred Heart.
The men's team beat NJIT 19-8, NYU 17-10, Vassar 25-2, and Sacred Heart 22-5, only falling short to Princeton, 17-10.
The women's team beat NJIT 24-3, NYU 21-6, Vassar 24-3 and Sacred Heart 23-4.
Leading the charge for the men's team were four fencers who tallied seven or more wins. Neil Lilov (10-2) in the saber, Devin Tafoya (9-2) in the epee, and co-captain Arwen Borowiak (8-1) and Tit Nam Cheng (7-2) in the foil.
Two Nittany Lions from the women's team, Arianna Proietti and Kateryna Chorniy, finished the day undefeated. Proietti went 12-0 in foil and Chorniy went 11-0 in epee. As the women's team swept all four opponents, additional top finishers were Aurora Colter (10-1), Axelle Wasiak (9-2), Eden De La Cruz (8-1), and Ola Strzalkowski (7-1).
