UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The 10th-ranked Penn State women's ice hockey team cruised to a 7-1 defeat over Lindenwood in the second game of the CHA semifinals on Saturday. Penn State now advances to the program's first ever CHA Championship match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State came out firing in the opening frame as they scored three unanswered goals in the period. The Nittany Lions also fired 28 shots on goal in the frame.
- Kendall Butze and Kiara Zanon each notched a power-play goal 11:17 and 16:51 into the period followed by a goal by Lexi Bedier to put Penn State ahead 3-0 after one.
- Just 5:24 into the second period, Tessa Janecke found the back of the net off a feed by Izzy Heminger to put Penn State ahead 4-0.
- In the closing seconds of the period, Alyssa Machado slipped one pasted the netminder off assists by Bedier and Mya Vaslet to put Penn State ahead 5-0 after two periods.
- Tessa Janecke kicked-off the final frame with a goal just 11 seconds into the period on a breakaway to put Penn State ahead 6-0.
- Janecke then scored one more time in the period just five minutes later 5:38 into the frame to put Penn State ahead 7-0.
- Lindenwood tallied one goal in the closing minutes at 17:05 Chole Corbin scored the lone goal for the Lions to make the final score 7-1 Penn State.
GOALTENDING
- Goalie Josie Bothun captured her 25th win of the season stopping 14 shots on 15 attempted.
GAME NOTES AND STATS
- Penn State advances to the program's first ever CHA Championship game.
- Tessa Janecke tallied her first career hat-trick and is the second ever in program history to be scored by a Nittany Lion in the CHA postseason.
- Janecke marks the fourth hat-trick scored his season and 15th in program history.
- Penn State recorded the second most shots on goal in a single CHA postseason game with 64 on the day.
- The seven goals scored is the most in a CHA playoff game by Nittany Lions.
