Men's Lacrosse Set to Face Army in NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's lacrosse team embarks on their second NCAA quarterfinal matchup in program history as they take on Army West Point on Sunday, May 21 at noon in Annapolis, Md.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Army currently leads the series 29-3 with the last matchup coming on April 3,1999 when the Nittany Lions fell to the Black Knights 19-12.

SCOUTING ARMY WEST POINT

  • Army West Point enters the match with a 13-3 overall record as they recently defeated Maryland in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament championship game 16-15 on Saturday, May 13.
  • Leading the way on the offensive front for the Black Knights is Reese Bruek who leads the team in points with 60 off 34 goals and 24 assists.
  • In net stands Mike Dent who has played and started in 14 games this season. He currently tallies a save percentage of .539 and a GAA of 9.47.

NITTANY LIONS IN THE TOURNAMENT

  • Penn State will make its second NCAA quarterfinal appearance in program history with its first appearance coming in the in the 2019 season.
  • The Nittany Lions own a 3-5 overall record in the NCAA Tournament and have reached the final four one time in 2019 when they fell to Yale 21-17.
  • Penn State faced Loyola (Md.) in the quarterfinal round in 2019 and defeated the Greyhounds, 21-14 to advance to the semifinal round.

HOW WE GOT HERE

  • Penn State is coming off a massive 13-12 comeback victory over Princeton in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament.
  • With 9:20 remaining in the second quarter, Penn State trailed 7-1 to the Tigers before going on an 11-2 scoring run to regain the lead to 12-9 in the beginning of the fourth quarter.
  • The Nittany Lion defense held the Tigers to just three more goals while Penn State added one more to seal the victory.
  • Sophomore Ethan Long led the way with a single-game high five goals while TJ Malone was the lead point getter with six off two goals and four assists.
  • Sophomore goalie Jack Fracyon tied a program record in single-game saves in an NCAA tournament game with 16 which aided strongly in the Nittany Lions victory.

REGULAR SEASON CHAMPS

  • For just the second time in program history, Penn State clinched the Big Ten Regular Season title following their 14-5 victory over Rutgers on April 21.
  • The last time the Nittany Lions clinched the regular season title came in 2019 when they also won the Big Ten tournament and advanced all the way to the NCAA final four.
  • Penn State had 10 goal scorers in the victory which was the third time Penn State had 10 or more goal scorers in a single game this season.
  • Jack Fracyon stopped 17 shots and allowed just five goals which is a career-low for the sophomore.

UP NEXT

  • With a win, Penn State advances to the NCAA Tournament semifinals which will be played in Philadelphia, Pa. on May 27 versus the winner of the quarterfinal game between Duke and Michigan.
