UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State field hockey team will begin Lisa Bervinchak Love's inaugural season as head coach with a four-game road trip as the 2023 schedule has been announced. Bervinchak Love will guide a veteran Penn State squad through a 16-game regular season as it looks to build momentum for the 2023 Big Ten Tournament in Michigan during the first weekend of November.
The Nittany Lions begin the season on Friday, Aug. 25, with a game at the University of Virginia at 6 p.m. Two days later, Penn State visits American University in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, Aug. 27, for a 12 p.m. game. The Nittany Lions then trek to the West Coast for two games in California the following weekend. Penn State will visit the University of California-Berkeley on Friday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. Eastern (4 p.m. local) and Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 3 p.m. Eastern (12 p.m. local).
Penn State will play the first home game under Bervinchak Love on Friday, Sept. 8, when Kent State visits the Penn State Field Hockey Complex for a 6 p.m. contest. The Nittany Lions then host Delaware on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 1 p.m. Big Ten play begins in Happy Valley the following weekend, with Rutgers visiting Penn State on Friday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. The Lions host Bucknell on Sunday, Sept. 17, in a non-conference game at 12 p.m. Penn State closes out a three-week homestand the following Sunday, Sept. 24, when Syracuse visits Happy Valley for a 12 p.m. contest.
Seven conference games will close out Penn State's regular season, beginning with a trip to Maryland on Sunday, Oct. 1, for a 1 p.m. contest. The Nittany Lions return home on Friday, Oct. 6, hosting Ohio State at 5 p.m. at the Field Hockey Complex. The next weekend has Penn State in Michigan for two conference road games. Penn State is at Michigan State on Friday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. and at Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 12 p.m.
The Nittany Lions final home weekend begins on Friday, Oct. 20, with a 6 p.m. home game against Northwestern and concludes on Sunday, Oct. 22, with a 12 p.m. contest against visiting Iowa. The Nittany Lions close out the regular season at Indiana on Friday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m.
The 2023 Big Ten Tournament will take place on Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 2-5, at the University of Michigan in Ann, Arbor, Mich. The 2023 NCAA Tournament begins the following weekend, Nov. 10-12, with the first round and quarterfinals. The national semifinals/final will be hosted by North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Nov. 17-19.
Penn State will host two preseason scrimmages during August as the squad prepares to open its regular season. The Lions will welcome St. Joseph's on Sunday, Aug. 13, for a 1 p.m. scrimmage and Villanova on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 2 p.m. for a second scrimmage.
Penn State is coming off a superb 2022 season. The team advanced to the national semifinals and won a share of the 2022 Big Ten Championship. The Nittany Lions finished the stellar campaign with a 17-4 record.
