UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's and women's fencing teams competed Saturday at the St. John's Invitational in Queens.
Senior foilist Aidan Johnson spearheaded the men's team with a 12-3 finish, including 3-0 sweeps of Ohio State and Columbia and 2-1 wins over St. John's, Notre Dame and Harvard. Arwen Borowiak went 7-4 with Spencer Burke 5-6 and Alessio Fukuda 3-5. On the women's side of foil, Eden De La Cruz finished the day 6-8 with her performance highlighted by a 3-0 sweep of Ohio State. Arianna Proietti went 6-6 on the day with Thea Fernandes 0-5 and Ariel Ratsep 0-9.
In men's epee, Tingwei Xu went 8-7 including a 3-0 run over St. John's. Nicholas Glaz finished the day 2-2 with Zach Suico 1-7, Mitchel Bekker 1-5, Devin Tafoya 0-4 and Peter Kambeseles 3-5. Women's epee showed out with Kateryna Chorniy and Axelle Wasiak both going 9-6 on the day with Jaclyn Khrol close behind going 8-7.
Kamar Skeete led the saber squad going 9-6 on the day with Nicholas Pope 6-9 and Jeffrey Basalyga 1-14. On the women's side, Ola Strzalkowski went 1-2 as Aurora Colter went 3-10, Mia Novick 2-7, Amelia Baker 3-6 and Eunya Kim 4-7.
Both the men's and women's teams narrowly fell short to Harvard (men's 14-13, women's 16-11), Notre Dame (men's 16-11, women's 19-8), St John's (men's 14-13), Columbia (men's 19-8, women's 14-13) and Ohio State (men's 14-13, women's 15-12).
The Nittany Lions continue action tomorrow at the Philadelphia Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
