Men's Hockey Drops Series Opener at Notre Dame, 4-1

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Penn State fell in the series opener to Notre Dame, 4-1, in Big Ten Conference action on Friday evening inside Compton Family Ice Arena.

The Nittany Lions drop their fifth-consecutive Big Ten game falling to 10-10-3 overall and 2-8-3-0-0-2 in conference action with the loss while the Irish move to 12-11-2 on the year and 6-7-2-0-0-1 in league play following the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Notre Dame opened the scoring as Danny Nelson deposited a rebound into a yawning net for the 1-0 edge at the 6:29 mark of the first frame.
  • The Irish extended their lead with just 0.6 seconds remaining in the first period as Trevor Janicke picked the corner shorthanded past the blocker of sophomore net-minder Noah Grannan (Germantown, Wis.) for the 2-0 score.
  • Penn State cut the deficit in half midway through the second period as junior Dylan Lugris (Buffalo, N.Y.) deposited a rebound after freshman Dane Dowiak's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) initial bid was turned aside for the 2-1 score at the 10:47 mark.
  • The hosts regained the two-goal advantage as Maddox Flemming took advantage of a defensive zone turnover by the Nittany Lions and he picked the corner over Grannan's glove from the high slot for the 3-1 score at 14:35 of the middle stanza.
  • Ryan Siedem hit the empty net with just 75 ticks remaining to account for the 4-1 final.

GOALTENDING
Grannan falls to 3-4-2 on the year following a 21-save effort in the loss while his counterpart, Ryan Bischel, moves to 12-11-2 with the victory after stopping 38-of-39 shots in the win.

NOTES

  • Penn State held the commanding 39-25 edge in shots on goal, however, they were unable to capitalize on five powerplay chances, but went a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
  • The Nittany Lions are now 2-6-3 when conceding the first goal of the game this season.
