Swimming and Diving Defeated Despite Strong Effort in Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG, Va.- The Penn State Nittany Lions Swimming and Diving team was defeated by Virginia Tech and Princeton University despite several strong efforts from the Nittany Lions Swimmers. 

The men's team fell to the Hokies by a score of 208-92 while the women's team came up just short by a score of 218-82.  

Top Swims 

Sophomore Morgan Moore continued her long-distance dominance this season swimming the 1000 free in 10:03.52 which placed second. On the men's side of the 1000 free, sophomore Eduardo Cisternas touched the wall fourth with a time of 9:20.62.  

Sophomore Catherine Meisner finished second-place finish in the 200 free with a blazing fast time of 1:47.15. Meisner continued her impressive afternoon, finishing third in the 500 free in a time of 4:54.74.  

Sophomore Cooper Morley turned in the only Nittany Lions win of the day finishing the 100 back in 46.91.  

In the 100 breast, senior Kylie Rydland finished in third position posting a time of 1:03.13. On the men's side, sophomore Mariano Lazzerini finished in the second position posting a time of 52.77.  

Senior Cat Stanford continued to build on her dominant resume this season placing third in the 100 free and posting a time of 49.84.  

In the 200 back, sophomore Matthew Bittner finished in the third position with a 1:46.61.  

Senior Margaret Markvardt got on the scoreboard for the Nittany Lions finishing the 100-fly in a time of 53.59 which was good for second place.  

Relays 

The men's 200 medley relay of Morley, Lazzerini, junior Victor Baganha and senior Tommy Hurley began the day with a second-place finish in a time of 1:25.94.  

The women's 200 medley relay of senior Ellie Brandbergh, Rydland, Markvardt and Stanford finished fourth with a time of 1:39.60. 

To finish the meet, both the men's and women's 400-free relay teams finished in third position. 

Top Dives 

On the women's side, freshman Kailey Koval finished in third position with a dive of 290.15 in the three-meter dive. This was a team record and a personal best for the season.  

For the men, senior Kevin Sullivan ended the three-meter dive in third position with a dive of 356.95.  

Next Up 

The Nittany Lions will return home to McCoy Natatorium in two weeks for a matchup against Villanova Friday Feb. 2 at 4 p.m.
