Arwen Borowiak Goes 14-0 at Philadelphia Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams traveled to Philadelphia for Sunday's Philadelphia Invitational at Penn after competing in the St. John's Invitational yesterday. The Nittany Lions faced fencers from NJIT, Duke, Yale, Drew (men only) and Princeton. 
 
Arwen Borowiak posted an impressive 14-0 record in men's foil, including a 2-0 win over NJIT and 3-0 wins over Duke, Yale, Drew and Princeton. Alessio Fukuda finished the day 5-4 with Spencer Burke going 3-7 and Aidan Johnson 6-6. On the women's side, Arianna Proietti lead the squad going 8-3, highlighted by a 3-0 win over NJIT and a 2-0 win over Princeton. Eden De La Cruz went 5-4, Ariel Ratsep went 3-3 and Thea Fernandes went 2-2. 
 
While representing Penn State in men's epee, Mitchel Bekker and Tingwei Xu each went 6-3, both with 3-0 wins over Duke. Zach Suico finished 5-1, Peter Kambeseles 2-4, Nicholas Glaz 1-4 and Devin Tafoya 4-6. In women's epee, Kateryna Chorniy went 9-3 with Axelle Wasiak 7-4 and Jaclyn Khrol 2-4. 
 
In men's saber, Neil Lilov went 10-2 with 3-0 wins over Duke and Drew. Nicholas Pope finished 8-7, Kamar Skeete 7-5 and Jeffrey Basalyga 3-3. Ola Strzalkowsli mirrored Lilov's record on the women's side with 3-0 wins over NJIT and Yale. Mia Novick finished 6-2, Eunya Kim 5-4, Amelia Baker 1-1 and Aurora Colter 2-4.
 
Select Penn State fencers are next slated to attend the Junior Olympics Feb. 17 and 18 in Charlotte, N.C.
