UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Athletics will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day throughout the next two weeks surrounding the nationally-recognized day Wednesday, Feb. 7. The department is featuring a variety of events to commemorate girls and women in sports from Sunday, Jan. 28 through Saturday, Feb. 10, highlighted by NGWSD games at women's basketball and women's hockey.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day is dedicated nationally to paying tribute to and increasing athletic opportunities for girls and women in sports and fitness, as well as advancing the struggle for equality on the playing fields.
All of Penn State's women's sports programs will be involved in the NGWSD celebration, which will begin with a "Kick Off Celebration" at the women's basketball game on Sunday, Jan. 28 as they celebrate girls and women in sports, while also acknowledging those who support girls and women in sports. There will be a Kids Zone with a face painter and balloon artist, as well as games and crafts. The Girl Scouts will also be on hand giving away cookies and participating in a badge ceremony at halftime.
On Saturday, Feb. 3, the women's hockey team host their National Women and Girls in the Sports Day game, which will feature a variety of events for fans, including a face painter, balloon artist and caricature artist in the Kids Zone and a postgame skate with the team following the game on Saturday, Feb. 3. There will also be a NGWSD display from the All-Sports Museum at the game.
The department will also be featuring special podcasts and videos to highlight the women in sports at Penn State, as well as featuring key female leaders in the department and among Penn State's athletics programs.
