UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State women's basketball welcomes Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 28 as the kickoff event to Penn State's National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration. Tip off in the Bryce Jordan Center is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on B1G+.
 
The Lady Lions look for their fourth straight win as they take on the Terrapins who look for back-to-back conference wins for the first time this season.

  • CLEAR BAG POLICY: The Bryce Jordan Center has a clear bag policy. Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVB and are 12" x 6" x 12" or smaller are permitted. Small clutches or wristlets that are 4" x 6" x 1" are also permissible, as well as one-gallon clear plastic freezer bags. LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State earned its fourth consecutive conference win against Northwestern on Thursday, Jan. 25. The Lady Lions have surpassed their B1G win total from last season with five already this campaign.
  • Makenna Marisa became only the seventh Lady Lion in program history to surpass 2,000 career points. She also becomes only the 16th active division I women's basketball player to exceed the milestone.
  • Marisa totaled 20 points for the third time this season to pass Tanisha Wright in the Penn State record book, becoming the seventh all-time scorer in school history.
  • Owusu also hit the 20-point mark, her fourth time scoring 18-plus-points this season. She surpassed double figures in the first half for the second game in a row.
  • The Lady Lions earned the sweep of the Wildcats, after winning the  game played in Happy Valley on Jan. 2 by a 40-point margin and now coming home with a road win in the second match up of the season.
  • Penn State held Northwestern to 38.3% shooting from the field.

LADY LIONS IN THE RANKS 

  • Makenna Marisa ranks 11th in the B1G in points per game and ninth in field goal percentage (48.3).
  • Shay Ciezki ranks 14th in the Big Ten, averaging 14.4 points per game. Her total of 274 points through 19 games sits at a rank of 11. Ciezki is fourth in the Big Ten and 27th nationally in made three-pointers with 50. Her 40.3 clip beyond the arc sits her fifth in the conference.
  • Leilani Kapinus is sixth in the conference in blocks per game with a 1.11 mark and second in steals (40).
  • The Lady Lions are second in the country in three-point percentage and first in the B1G, shooting 40.5%. They also rank 18th nationally and third in the conference in three-pointers per game with 8.8. The team also has the seventh highest scoring offense in the country, averaging 86.3 points per game.
  • Penn State ranks sixth in the nation and third in the conference in field goal percentage (50.4).
  • The Lady Lions also rank first in the league in steals per game (10.5), second in blocked shots per game (4.5) and second in bench points per game (27.0).
  • The Lady Lions defense forces 20.74 turnovers per game which is second in the B1G and 25th in the nation.

2023-24 ACCOLADES

  • Ashley Owusu was named to the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (1/22) after averaging 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two of Penn State's B1G wins.
  • Shay Ciezki collected her first conference accolade of the season after totaling 62 points through three games including a personal best 27-point performance against Oklahoma State in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship. The Buffalo native made the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 27.
  • Marisa earned a spot on the three-person Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (11/20) after her to double digit scoring outings against Kansas (34 points) and St. John's (15 points).
  • Marisa was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the second consecutive season. She also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten preseason team.
  • Owusu repeats on the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award Watch List. 

SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS

  • Maryland is on a back-and-forth conference success roller coaster, not winning or losing consecutive B1G games yet this season. 
  • The Terrapins are 12-7 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
  • Maryland owns B1G wins against Northwestern, Minnesota, Purdue and Illinois and losses to Nebraska, Michigan State, Ohio State and Michigan.
  • The Terrapins most recent game ended in a second half collapse to lead to overtime, during which the Michigan Wolverines came back to earn the victory by a 79-77 margin. Bri McDaniel was ejected during the contest.
  • Shyanne Sellers leads the team in points, averaging 16 points per game. She also leads the team in rebounding with a 5.9 average. Sellers ranks seventh in the conference in points per game and points.
  • Bri McDaniel also averages double figures with 12.7 points per game and Jakia Brown-Turner also scores at  a 11.7 clip.
  • Maryland has the fifth best scoring offense in the conference and 20th best in the nation, scoring 80.7 points per game.

PENN STATE –MARYLAND SERIES

  • The Terrapins lead the all-time series by a 14-21 margin.
  • Maryland has won the most recent 13 games. 
  • Penn State has not beat Maryland since December 3, 2003.
  • The Lady Lions are 8-9 in games against the Terrapins played in Happy Valley.
  • Penn State owns one, 100-plus-point performance against Maryland in school history, a 101 point total on December 4, 2002.
