Women's Hockey Clinches CHA Regular Season Title with 5-3 Win Over RIT

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - For the second straight year, the Penn State women's ice hockey team clinched the College Hockey America Regular Season title following their 5-3 victory over RIT on Friday afternoon.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • RIT jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a goal by Megan McCormick with 18:57 remaining in the first period.  
  • Penn State responded with 7:07 left in the frame as Tessa Janecke scored the first goal for the Nittany Lions off feeds by Stella Retrum and Katelyn Roberts to even the score at 1-1. 
  • The Tigers then capitalized on the power-play with a goal off the stick of Kyla Bear to take a 2-1 lead with 1:09 remaining in the opening period.  
  • Penn State closed out the frame with a goal by Mya Vaslet with only 0:42 seconds remaining in the period to even the game at 2-2 after one period.  
  • After a scoreless opening half of the second period, Katelyn Roberts scored her first goal of the game with 5:49 remaining in the second frame to put Penn State ahead 3-2.  
  • RIT struck back in the third period off a goal by Emma Pickering with 17:32 remaining in the period to even the score at 3-3.  
  • Penn State then closed the game with a pair of goals first by Roberts with 11:36 left in regulation to give the Nittany Lions a 4-3 lead.  
  • Mya Vaslet sealed the win with her second goal of the game with 2:31 left in the third period to secure the 5-3 victory.  

GOALTENDERS 

  • Sophomore goalie Katie DeSa recorded 15 saves on 18 shots attempted to improve her record to 6-2-2 on the year.  

STATS AND NOTES 

  • Tessa Janecke's goal in the first period was her 50th point of the season, the most by Penn State women's hockey player in a single season in program history. 
  • Janecke's three-point game upped her career points total to 99.  
  • Penn State clinched its second straight CHA Regular Season title and third in program history.  
  • Katelyn Roberts registered her third game of three-points or more after her two goal and one assist day.  
  • Head coach Jeff Kampersal has won every CHA Regular Season title in program history.

  • Penn State concludes the 2023-24 regular season on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. against RIT.
