No. 15 Women's Hockey Downs RIT 2-1 in Opening Game of CHA Semifinals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 15 Penn State women's ice hockey team downed fourth-seeded RIT 2-1 in the first game of the College Hockey America Postseason semifinals on Friday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first period, Mya Vaslet squeaked a goal passed the RIT netminder to put Penn State ahead 1-0 with 16:17 remaining the second frame.
  • Then with 5:12 left in the period, Maggie MacEachern would fire her sixth goal of the season off feeds by Stella Retrum and Katelyn Roberts to push Penn State ahead 2-0.
  • In the closing seconds of the third period, RIT would score after their goalie was pulled as Lindsey Maloney would score with 32 seconds left but wasn't enough resulting in the Penn State victory. 

GOALTENDERS

  • Sophomore goalie Katie DeSa recorded 22 saves off 23 shots as her record improved to 7-2-2 on the year. 

STATS AND NOTES

  • This is Penn State's fifth win against RIT in the CHA postseason.
  • Mya Vaslet her third goal in the last three games.
  • MacEachern scored her first goal since February 3.
  • Penn State out-shot the Tigers 46-23.

UP NEXT

  • Penn State looks to advance to the CHA Championship on Saturday, Feb. 24 when they remain home to host the Tigers at 1 p.m.
