No. 15 Women's Hockey Advances to CHA Championship with 4-0 Shutout Over RIT

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 15 Penn State women's ice hockey team defeated RIT 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in game two of the College Hockey America postseason semifinals. With the win, Penn State advances the CHA tournament championship game which will be held at Pegula Ice Arena on March 2 at 2 p.m.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Nittany Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off a goal by Tessa Janecke with 13:36 remaining in the first period off assists by Karly Garcia and Lyndie Lobdell.
  • In the second frame, Julie Gough was able to capitalize on the power-play with 17:10 remaining in the period to give Penn State a 2-0 lead.
  • 44 seconds later in the frame Lyndie Lobdell scored her first goal of the game off a feed Brianna Brooks with 16:34 left in the period to give Penn State a commanding 3-0 lead.
  • In the closing minutes of the third frame, Maddy Christian would fire an empty-net goal from the opposite end of the ice to secure the 4-0 victory.

GOALTENDERS

  • Sophomore goalie Katie DeSa tallied her third shutout victory of the season after recording 23 saves.
  • Her record improves to 8-2-2 on the season. 

STATS AND NOTES

  • With Janecke's goal, she scored her 100th career point which marks her as the fastest player in program history to hit the 100-point mark.
  • Penn State advances to their second straight CHA championship game.
  • Lobdell registered her first goal since Feb. 2.
  • Penn State secured their 11th CHA tournament victory.

  • Penn State hosts the winner of the second semifinal series between Robert Morris and Mercyhurst on Saturday, March 2 in the CHA tournament championship game. Puck-drop is set for 2 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena.
