Lady Lions Conclude Regular Season Road Slate at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- Penn State women's basketball travels to West Lafayette, Ind. for a Wednesday night contest against the Purdue Boilermakers. The second meeting between the Lady Lions and the Boilermakers is set for a 7 p.m. tip off inside Mackey Arena.
 
The Lady Lions (16-11, 7-9 Big Ten) look to bounce back from a six-game slide, with a recent loss to no. 2 Ohio State while Purdue (12-15, 5-11 Big Ten) looks to continue its momentum for its recent win over Wisconsin.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Ohio State created a lead throughout the early minutes of the first quarter that Penn State could not come back from. The final score was 82-69 in the Lady Lions Return to Rec game.
  • Penn State women's basketball hosted the contest in Rec Hall, the first time returning to its former home since it made the permanent switch to the Bryce Jordan Center in 1996. 
  • The Lady Lions posted a better shooting percentage than the Buckeyes, oushooting OSU by a 49.1 to 47.1 margin. 
  • Penn State also out worked Ohio State on the board, outrebounding the visiting team by a 35-29 clip.
  • Three Lady Lions surpassed double figures. 
  • Ashley Owusu led PSU in scoring, posting 22 points marking her fourth 20-plus-point performance of the season and 11th time recoding double-digit scoring. 
  • Leilani Kapinus earned her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. 
  • Brigham rounded out the PSU players scoring 10 or more points with 10 herself on nearly perfect shooting from the field at a 5-of-6 clip. 

LADY LIONS IN THE RANKS 

  • Makenna Marisa ranks 14th in the B1G in field goal percentage (46.0).
  • Shay Ciezki ranks fourth in the B1G and 36th nationally in made three-pointers with 66. Her 39.3 clip beyond the arc sits her fourth in the conference and 46th nationally and her 2.44 per game sits at fourth in the B1G and 42nd in the country.
  • Leilani Kapinus is first in the B1G in steals with 60 and steals per game, grabbing 2.22 per game. She is also fifth in the conference in blocks per game with a 1.19 mark.
  • The Lady Lions are eighth in the country in three-point percentage and second in the B1G, shooting 38.3%. They also rank 15th nationally and third in the conference in three-pointers per game with 8.9. The team also has the seventh highest scoring offense in the country, averaging 83.9 points per game.
  • Penn State ranks seventh in the nation and third in the conference in field goal percentage (48.9).
  • The Lady Lions also rank second in the league in steals per game (10.0), third in blocked shots per game (4.1) and second in bench points per game (25.7).
  • Penn State's defense forces 19.51 turnovers per game which is second in the B1G and 40th in the nation. 

2023-24 ACCOLADES

  • Ashley Owusu was named to the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (1/22) after averaging 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two of Penn State's B1G wins. She repeated on the list on 2/6 after averaging 17.5 points, eight rebounds and four assists in two games while tallying her 1,500th career point.
  • Shay Ciezki collected her first conference accolade of the season after totaling 62 points through three games including a personal best 27-point performance against Oklahoma State in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship. The Buffalo native made the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll on 11/27.
  • Marisa earned a spot on the three-person Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (11/20) after her to double digit scoring outings against Kansas (34 points) and St. John's (15 points). Marisa found herself on the honor roll again on 1/29 after surpassing 2,000 career points.
  • Marisa was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the second consecutive season. She also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten
  • preseason team.
  • Owusu repeats on the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award Watch List.

SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS 

  • Purdue sits in the 12th spot in the conference with its 5-11 B1G record and 12-15 overall record. 
  • The Boilermakers are coming off a road win against Wisconsin on Sunday.
  • They hold other B1G wins over Northwestern, Illinois and Rutgers.
  • Four Boilermakers average double figure scoring: Abbey Ellis (13.7), Caitlyn Harper (11.0), Mary Ashley (10.2) and Madison Layden (10.0).
  • Madison Layden leads the team in three-point percentage with her 42.9 clip beyond the arc which makes her the second highest three-point shooter in the conference.
  • Jeanae Terry ranks second in the Big Ten in assists (168) and assists per game (6.2).
  • Purdue has the 15th best free throw shooting team in the nation, shooting 78.5% from the charity stripe.

PENN STATE –PURDUE SERIES

  • Purdue leads the all-time series between the two teams 35-24, the meetings dating back to Dec. 21, 1988.
  • Penn State won the most recent match up earlier this season in Happy Valley with a 80-67 final score.
  • Graduate guards Tay Valladay and Ashley Owusu led Penn State in scoring in the last meeting, Valladay with 22 points and Owusu with 19.
  • The Lady Lions are 7-19 in games played on the road in West Lafayette.
