PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Penn State women's lacrosse defeated No. 22 Rutgers in a 10-9 overtime upset victory in SHI Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Penn State improves to 3-4 overall (1-0 Big Ten), while Rutgers moves to 5-2 overall (0-1 Big Ten).
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – PSU 0, Rutgers 4
Rutgers notched four goals in the opening quarter, beginning scoring at 10:19 and tallying their fourth goal with 3:54 left in the first quarter.
Second Quarter – PSU 6, Rutgers 7
The Nittany Lions came alive in the second quarter with Gretchen Gilmore starting off the scoring. Brooke Hoss tallied her eighth goal of the season with a shot from the far left wing.
Kristen O'Neill also found success from the far left wing to narrow the Rutgers lead.
Rutgers responded, but Gilmore tallied her second goal of the game with 7:42 remaining in the half.
On a man-up opportunity, Kara Nealon scored with an assist by Payton Wainman. Wainman tallied a goal of her own to tie the game at six apiece with Gilmore getting the assist.
The Scarlet Knights regained the lead with 16 seconds left in the quarter.
Third Quarter – PSU 8, Rutgers 7
Meghan Murray tied the game back up at 7-7 just over five minutes into the quarter. Less than a minute later, Gilmore earned a hat trick to give Penn State the lead for the first time in the game.
Fourth Quarter – PSU 9, Rutgers 9
Murray scored again in the fourth, giving the Nittany Lions a two-goal lead.
Rutgers tallied two close goals, forcing overtime.
Overtime – PSU 10, Rutgers 9
At 4:32 in overtime, Gilmore scored the winning goal from the close right wing with Kayla Abernathy earning the assist.
GAME NOTES
>> Goalkeepers Sydney Manning and Ashley Bowan faced a combined 20 shots, with Bowan getting credit for the win and recording three saves.
>> Gilmore led the team in scoring, tallying four goals on five shots on goal.
>> Murray scored two goals. Hoss, Nealon, O'Neill and Wainman all notched one.
>> The defense scooped up 18 groundballs and caused seven turnovers.
>> Penn State led in shots 29-20 and in draw controls 9-8.
