Day One of NCAA Fencing Championships Complete

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's and women's fencing teams have 11 qualifiers competing at the NCAA Championships from March 21-24 at The Ohio State University's French Field House. On the first day of action, the Nittany Lions had five fencers from the women's team compete in rounds 1-3 of their respective weapons. 
 
Arianna Proietti and Samantha Catantan competed in foil with Kateryna Chorniy and Jaclyn Khrol in epee and Ola Strzalkowski in sabre.
 
After three rounds, Khrol sits at 8th place in epee as she won 9/15 bouts. Chorniy won 7/15 and is currently in 12thplace.
 
In foil, Samantha Catantan and Arianna Proietti both won 8/15 bouts, claiming an 11th and 12th place going into day two of competition. 
 
Ola Strzalkowski, the lone women's sabre qualifier, won 7/15 and finished the day in 16th place.
 
All fencers from the women's team will continue fencing tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. with rounds four and five. Semifinals and championship bouts will begin at 1:30 p.m. in St. John Arena (an extension of the French Field House). These bouts will be aired on ESPN+.

The men's team, with six qualifiers, will begin their NCAA run on Saturday at 9 a.m. with rounds 1-3 of epee. Men's foil will begin at 11 a.m. with sabre to conclude the day at 1:30 p.m. Rounds four and five will start Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with semifinals and finals at 1:30 p.m.
