True freshman Tyler Kasak, the No. 7 seed at 149, met No. 5 Ty Watters of West Virginia in the third place bout. Kasak defeated the Mountaineer posting a 3-2 win to take third place. Kasak becomes only the ninth wrestler to ever lose a first round bout and win seven straight to take third at nationals. The Nittany Lions clinched the 2024 NCAA Championship on the wave of a perfect 6-0 run in the national semifinals on Friday evening March 22, 2024 while also adding eight All-Americans to their ledger at the event in Kansas City's T-Mobile Center.
