STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Penn State men's golf team is set for its lone home tournament of the 2023-24 season this weekend when the Nittany Lions host the 47th-annual Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State's Blue Course Saturday and Sunday.
The 54-hole tournament plays at a par 71 with a 7,171-yard layout with two rounds on Saturday, April 13 and a final 18 holes on Sunday, April 14. Saturday's first round begins with 7:30 a.m. tee times with the second round to follow. Sunday's final round will feature a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Tee times, pairings and live scoring for both days will be available on GolfStat.
The 14-team field includes host Penn State, Binghamton, Colgate, Connecticut, Delaware, Eastern Michigan, FGCU, George Mason, Georgetown, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, Temple, Towson and Valparaiso.
Scores from Patrick Sheehan, Jake Griffin, Jimmy Meyers, Morgan Lofland and Billy Pabst Jr. are eligible to count toward Penn State's team total. Nittany Lions James Allen, Zach Smith, Jud Langille and Robby O'Regan will participate as individuals.
The Nittany Lions have dominated the Rutherford since it was established as the Nittany Lion Invitational in 1975, winning the tournament 30 times including each of the last eight events. Twenty-one Penn State golfers have medaled atop the leaderboard, the last being James Allen in 2022.
The tournament became known as the Rutherford Intercollegiate in 1983 to honor R.B. "Pop" Rutherford Sr., the man known to the Nittany Lions as the "father of Penn State golf." Rutherford organized the first Penn State golf team in 1922 and coached it until 1949. R.B. Rutherford Jr. continued his father's coaching tradition from 1950-1956 and furthered a legacy recalled each spring.
Penn State has won eight-straight Rutherford Intercollegiate championships heading into this weekend's 47th edition of the event that has become one of the top events in the Northeast. The Nittany Lions won last season's tournament with a team score of 849 thanks in part to a strong final round that saw Penn State erase a seven-stroke deficit. Three Nittany Lions finished in the top 10, led by James Allen's fourth-place finish at 4-under, 209.
Live scoring of the 2024 Rutherford Intercollegiate will be available throughout the event via GolfStat.
