Nittany Lions Start Penn Relays with Excellent Outing Thursday

PHILADELPHIA – The Penn State track & field team set four top ten program marks on Thursday, the first day of the 128th Penn Relays.

Kileigh Kane and Florence Caron finished 3-4 in the College Women's 1500m Championship, recording 4:13.15 and 4:13.45 marks, respectively, for second and third on the Penn State all-time performance list. For the second week in a row, Makenna Krebs dropped her steeplechase PR, this time with a 10:01.29 mark that ranks fourth on Penn State's all-time list and top-15 in Division I this season. Finally, Sophia Toti clocked a 15:44.89 in the 5K, the third-best mark in Penn State history.

TRACK EVENT SUMMARY

Penn State's day on the track began with the 400-meter hurdles. Kylie Jacoutot finished 0.07 off her lifetime PR in the event, going 1:01.32 for 22nd overall in the College Women's Championship. Matt DeMatteo ran a 53.77 in the College Men's Championship.

The Nittany Lions then lined up in the 1500-meter championship races. Kane and Caron finished third and fourth overall in the College Women's Championship, clocking the No. 2 (4:13.15) and No. 3 (4:13.45) marks in Penn State history, respectively. Tanner Piotrowski finished 0.04 off his 1500-meter PR, going 3:45.08 to place ninth in the College Men's Championship. Kevin Haas (3:48.03) and Luke Seymour (3:48.71) finished 17th and 19th.

Krebs crushed her steeplechase PR, that she set last week at the Virginia Challenge, by nearly ten seconds to set the fourth-fastest steeplechase mark in school history. Krebs finished in 10:01.29 in her outstanding race. Allison Dougherty also set a PR in the event, clocking a 10:28.21 for 14th overall.

In the women's 5K, Toti placed third overall with the third-best 5K mark in Penn State history. The long distance specialist clocked a 15:44.89 PR to claim third. Katie Dallas also set a PR, breaking 17:00 for the first time in her career with a 16:58.89, while Claire Daniels ran a 17:06.16. Ryan Watson led the way for the men's crew in the College Championship, clocking a 14:08.37 PR to take 13th overall. Hayden Healey ran a 14:21.29 while Ramsey Little made his Penn State debut with a 14:30.25.

Kaylee McCullough closed out Penn State's night with a 34:36.99 in her first collegiate 10K.

FIELD EVENT SUMMARY

Samaria McDonald began Penn State's weekend at the 128th Penn Relays with a second-place finish in the College Women's Hammer Throw Championship. McDonald recorded a 204-8 (62.39m) throw in her second attempt of the afternoon to finish as the event's runner-up.

Penn State is set to continue Penn Relays competition Friday and will wrap up the weekend in Philadelphia on Saturday.
