BALTIMORE, Md. - The No. 7/8 Penn State men's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking loss to No. 10/7 Johns Hopkins by a score of 9-8 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State scored the lone goal of the first quarter off a goal by junior Matt Traynor with 12:55 remaining to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.
- Johns Hopkins would even the score at 1-1 with 9:07 left in the first half off a goal by Russell Melendez.
- Traynor gave the Nittany Lions back the lead with 3:13 remaining in the half off an assist by Mac Costin to give Penn State a 2-1 lead.
- The Blue Jays answered with 2:32 remaining in the second quarter off a goal by Jacob Angelus to even the score at 2-2.
- Mac Costin and TJ Malone closed the half with a pair of goals coming with 1:38 and 0:53 remaining to give Penn State a 4-2 edge heading into the second half.
- Johns Hopkins opened the second half with a goal by Jimmy Ayers with 11:20 remaining in the third quarter to tighten the Penn State lead to 4-3.
- Mac Costin answered with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter with his third goal of the game to give the Nittany Lions a 5-3 advantage.
- The Blue Jays and Nittany Lions each fired one more goal in the quarter to lead to 6-4 Penn State lead heading into the fourth quarter.
- Johns Hopkins started the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals to give the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead with 7:10 left in regulation.
- TJ Malone then tied the game up at seven with 5:14 remaining off a feed by Jake Morin.
- After Johns Hopkins scored a goal to regain the lead with 4:31 left, Mac Costin closed the fourth quarter with a goal to even the score at 8-8 and sending the game into overtime.
- With 2:39 remaining in the overtime period, Matt Collison would score the game-winner for the Blue Jays leading to the 9-8 overtime loss for Penn State.
GOALTENDER
- Junior Jack Fracyon allowed just nine goals while making 16 saves while his record drops to 7-3 on the year.
STATS AND NOTES
- Graduate student Mac Costin led the Nittany Lions with four points off three goals and one assist. He now has 21 goals on the year which is a single-season high.
- TJ Malone tallied his fifth hat-trick of the season with three goals in the game.
- Matt Traynor hit 30 goals on the year after his two-goal performance.
- Jack Fracyon held a team to under 10 goals for the fifth time this season.
