UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State women’s lacrosse head coach Missy Doherty announced that Steph Lazo will be returning back to Happy Valley as an assistant coach. Lazo has served as both an assistant and associate head coach at Delaware for six seasons.
“We are so excited to have Steph back in Happy Valley,” said Doherty. “She had a tremendous career here as a player and has grown into one of the top young coaches in the country. She loves Penn State and is ready to help our program continue to compete at the highest level.”
At Delaware, Lazo was responsible for the program’s offensive unit. During the Blue Hens 2024 campaign, Lazo helped the team tally 195 goals, averaging 12.19 per game.
Prior to Delaware, Lazo spent the 2019 season at Penn State as a volunteer assistant coach.
“I want to thank Head Coach, Missy Doherty, and Athletic Director, Pat Kraft, for this incredible opportunity to come back home and coach at my alma mater,” said Lazo. “I am excited to get started with our student-athletes and to make an impact on and off the field. For the Glory!”
A two-time All-American for the Nittany Lions, Lazo helped guide PSU to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including two trips to the semifinals.
In addition to her All-American accolades, the Stevensville, Md. native was a three-time All-Region selection, two-time All-Big Ten selection, two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and the 2017 Big Ten Attack Player of the Year.
As a senior, Lazo was a unanimous All-Big Ten pick, leading the conference in points (89) and assists (43). Her 89 points as a senior were the most for a Nittany Lion since the 1989 campaign while her 43 assists are good for second-most in program history. She also earned IWLCA Senior All-Star Game MVP honors in 2017.
The 2017 Penn State Female Athlete of the Year, Lazo finished her career ranked seventh all-time in program history in points (211) and assists (89).
Additionally, Lazo was selected by the New England Command in the inaugural Women’s Professional Lacrosse League.
Lazo was also named the head coach of the Philippines Women’s National Team in February.
