THIS WEEK

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Nittany Lion field hockey team (1-3, 0-0 B1G), under the guidance of head coach Lisa Bervinchak Love, plays its third straight road game this Friday before returning home for a Sunday matinee. The Lions are at Kent State (0-5) on Friday for a 3 p.m. game and then host Princeton (1-1*) on Sunday at 12 p.m. *Princeton hosts Miami, Ohio, on Friday as well.

The Nittany Lions are coming off a 1-1 road trip last weekend. Penn State fell 4-1 at No. 13 St. Joseph’s on Friday before rebounding for a 5-4 win at Delaware on Sunday. Senior Phia Gladieux scored Penn State’s goal in Friday’s game and then tallied a hat trick on Sunday to lead the Nittany Lions to victory.

Gladieux now has a team best 12 points off six goals. Julienne van Bekkum scored in Sunday’s win as well and has four points off a goal and two assists. True freshman Katelyn Strawser also scored against Delaware and has two points this year. True freshman keeper Aby Deverka has 26 saves and a .684 percentage after four games in goal.

Kent State enters Friday’s game with an 0-5 mark. The Golden Flash were on the West Coast for three games last weekend and fell to Stanford (3-1), California (3-1) and UC-Davis (2-0. The Nittany Lions own a 7-0 lead in the all-time series with the Golden Flash.

Princeton, which hosts Miami, Ohio, on Friday while Penn State is at Kent State, enters the weekend with a 1-1 record. The Tigers downed Louisville 1-0 last Friday and then fell to North Carolina 2-0 on Sunday. Penn State has a 27-13 lead in the all-time series between the two schools.

Penn State is at Bucknell in its next game on Sunday, Sept. 22. Game time in Lewisburg is set for 1 p.m.

• Gates open 1 hour prior to game time 
• The Field Hockey Complex is not a clear bag facility, however, bags

GLADIEUX’S HAT TRICK, STRAWSER AND
VAN BEKKUM’S GOALS, LEAD LIONS TO WIN AT UD
Phia Gladieux scored three times, including the game winner late, and true freshman Katelyn Strawser and grad student Julienne van Bekkum each picked up their first goals as Nittany Lions, to lead Penn State to a 5-4 win at Delaware. Penn State trailed early but the offensive burst helped spark PSU to its first on of the season.
 
GLADIEUX SCORES TWICE, DEVERKA TALLIES 14 SAVES IN TOP-TEN OPENING WEEKEND
Senior Phia Gladieux scored goals in each of Penn State’s opening weekend games and true freshman Aby Deverka collected 14 total saves against two top-ten ACC opponents. Gladieux had Penn State’s goal (from a Julienne van Bekkum assist) and Deverka had 11 saves in Penn State’s 2-1 loss to No. 3 Virginia on opening night, Friday, Aug. 30. Two days later on Sept. 1, Gladieux scored again and Deverka had three saves in a 2-1 loss to No. 10 Syracuse.
 
DEVERKA EARNS B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
HONORS ON OPENING WEEKEND
True freshman Aby Deverka tallied 14 saves against No. 3 Virginia and No. 10 Syracuse on opening weekend for Penn State, her first collegiate games. Starting from the onset, Deverka had 11 saves against the third-ranked Cavaliers and three against No. 10 Syracuse and was honored as Big Ten Freshman of the Week (9/3/24) to begin the season.
 
THREE LIONS NAMED TO B1G PRE-SEASON
PLAYERS TO WATCH LIST
Sophia Gladieux, Drew Taylor and Sophia Mannino were named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch list, released by the conference prior to the start of the 2024 season.
 
SENIOR TRIO NAMED 2024 TEAM CAPTAINS
The Penn State Nittany Lion field hockey team voted seniors Phia Gladieux, Julia Lamb and Drew Taylor as team captains during the second week of preseason practice. This marks the first time each of these Nittany Lions has been voted captain by her teammates.

* Doors for the Stadium opens 1 hour before game time. No outside food or drink is allowed inside the stadium.
 
Parking remains available on https://psu.parkmobile.io/field-hockey-complex, with presales at $5.50 until 12:01 am the day of the event, and continuing through the event at $10.  Parking purchased for Stadium West is valid in the Yellow H Shields and Wagner lots beginning at 5 pm on weekdays and all weekend, except when the lot is held for Men’s Hockey games and select other events.  
 
New this year, day of parking will also be available through ParkMobile and Honk, the new on-demand parking provider for campus.  There will be NO CASH sales this year.  When Field Hockey overlaps with Bryce Jordan Center events at a higher rate, purchases on psu.parkmobile.io will end 2 hours prior to the event, after which the day of price will be the higher of the rates.
