KICKIN’ IT
No. 12 Penn State women’s soccer dismantled the Michigan Wolverines by a 6-0 tally Thursday night on Jeffrey Field, with the Nittany Lions calling on six different goal scorers to close the book on the team’s most complete performance of the 2024 season while simultaneously booking the largest win over Michigan in school history. The Nittany Lions also saw six athletes combine for seven assists on the night, resulting in 12 different point scorers in the dominant PSU win. PSU’s scoring total amounted to 19 points, marking the highest team scoring output in Happy Valley since the Blue & White dropped 22 points on Central Connecticut State in a 7-0 victory in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Penn State additionally matched the program’s record for goals scored against Michigan, tying a 6-2 victory over the Wolverines from October 7, 2001.
With Thursday night’s dominant victory, the Nittany Lions improve to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Big Ten Conference, marking the first instance of consecutive B1G-opening victories at PSU since the 2017 and 2018 teams opened league play with a win. Penn State currently maintains a six-match unbeaten streak and returned to the win column following a scoreless draw against then-No. 23 Georgetown last weekend. Penn State saw continued success in B1G-opening matchups, rising to 23-5-3 through the program’s first 31 Big Ten regular season opening tests. In Big Ten home openers, the Blue & White climb to rise to an astronomical 28-2-1 mark when playing its first conference opponent on Jeffrey Field.
SENIOR SUNDAY
Penn State women's soccer will celebrate its Senior Day presented by the Penn State Alumni Association at the conclusion of Sunday's match, with the Nittany Lions set to honor Olivia Damico, Jordan Fusco, Kaitlyn MacBean, Devon Olive, Rowan Lapi, Elle Kershner, Mieke Schiemann, Kara Ogden and Natalie Wilson, in addition to senior student managers Zach Albright and Griffin Lee. Since arriving on the Penn State campus, this year's group of senior honorees have combined for an astonishing 78-27-11 overall record, made five consecutive NCAA Sweet 16 appearances and helped Penn State to its first National Quarterfinal appearance since 2018 a year ago. With PSU's group of 11 Senior Day honorees and their pair of graduating student managers, the Nittany Lions battled for the Big Ten Regular Season Championship in the spring of 2021, as well as a pair of Big Ten Tournament championships in the 2019 and 2022 campaigns, completing one of the most decorated senior class performances across all of Penn State Athletics.
Next Up: Columbia
CHALLENGING COLUMBIA
Head Coach Tracey Bartholomew leads the Columbia Lions into Sunday's northeastern non-conference clash with a 1-2-3 overall record through the early going in non-conference play. The Lions were tabbed as the No. 4 team in the Ivy League behind Harvard, Brown and Princeton which each received first-place votes. The Lions are fresh off their first victory of the 2024 campaign, battling for a solid 2-0 victory at home in New York City over the Fordham Rams. Columbia called on a pair of first-half goals in the first 25 minutes of action, and a solid defensive performance in the second half to close things out. Through their first six matches of the 2024 season, Columbia is led by Nata Ramirez's seven points split between three goals and an assist, while Lauren Rodriguez leads the way in goal with 12 saves.
STORY OF THE SERIES
Penn State and Columbia prepare for the first all-time meeting of the two programs, with PSU completing its 31-year trek through Ivy League opponents, challenging its eighth and final foe from the league this weekend on Jeffrey Field. The Blue & White have historically found significant success against Ivy League challengers since the program's first meeting against the conference in PSU's inaugural varsity campaign, starting with a fixture against the Cornell Big Red. PSU boasts a 17-4-0 ledger against Ivy League challengers all-time, highlighted by an unblemished 6-0-0 mark against Harvard, as well as a 3-0-0 tally against Princeton aided by a 1-0 road victory earlier this year.
