Senior tight end among candidates for college football’s premier scholar-athlete award

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State senior tight end Tyler Warren was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Football Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

 

The William V. Campbell Trophy, in its 35th year is tabbed as the “academic Heisman” is college football’s premier scholar-athlete award that annually recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.

  • Graduated in Fall 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in advertising/public relations and is pursuing a second degree in telecommunications.
  • He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
  • On the Mackey Award Watch List.
  • Has appeared in 43 career games, making 18 starts.
  • Earned third-team All-Big Ten honors from the coaches and honorable mention from the media in 2023.
  • He owns 65 receptions for 832 yards and 13 touchdowns, while adding two rushing scores and a passing touchdown.
  • Warren has 11 career receptions of 20+ yards and two 100-yard games.
  • Warren’s 13 career touchdown receptions are good for 14th all-time at Penn State and rank third among PSU tight ends, trailing only Mike Gesicki (15; 2014-17) and Pat Freiermuth (16; 2018-20).
  • He is 12th among PSU tight ends all-time with 65 career receptions and 832 career receiving yards.
  • He is one of five active FBS tight ends (two Big Ten) with 65+ receptions, 830+ receiving yards and 13+ receiving touchdowns in his career.
  • Among active FBS tight ends, Warren is tied-fourth in career receiving touchdowns, while sitting third averaging 12.8 yards per reception (min. 65 catches).
  • Currently riding a 19-game reception streak and has at least one 14-yard catch in each of the last nine games.
  • In 2024, he has 16 receptions for 226 yards and two touchdowns, while adding a passing touchdown and a 16-yard rush.
  • Among tight ends in 2024, Warren ranks second in receiving yards per game (75.3; 1st in B1G), third in yards per catch (14.1; 1st) among TEs with 15+ receptions, fourth in total receiving yards (226; 1st) and sixth in receptions (16; 2nd) and receiving touchdowns (2; T-1st).
  • Warren leads FBS tight ends with a 94.1 catch percentage among TEs with 15+ targets and ranks fourth in percentage of catches for first downs (75%) among TEs with 10+ catches.
  • He had a 19-yard touchdown reception at WVU.
  • Warren set a PSU-tight end record with 146 yards on eight catches, both career highs, against Bowling Green. He had catches of 22, 30, 29 and 23 yards.
  • Against Kent State, Warren tallied a 16-yard touchdown reception, 17-yard touchdown pass and a 16-yard rush.

 

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 23 and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2024 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas for the 66th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on Dec. 10.

 

Candidates for the awards must be: a senior who will complete his final year of eligibility in the 2024 season or graduate student or graduate transfer who has already earned a degree and participating in the 2024 season, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
