UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Sept. 3, 2024 – Penn State Nittany Lion true freshman Aby Deverka has been named Big Ten Field Hockey Freshman of the Week for the week ending Sept. 1, 2024. Deverka got the start in goal in her first collegiate games against two of the nation’s top teams.
Deverka helmed the goal for Penn State against No. 3 Virginia and No. 10 Syracuse in a weekend versus ranked ACC foes. She kept Penn State close in both games, tallying 11 saves against third-ranked Virginia on Friday night and three saves against tenth-ranked Syracuse on Sunday. The Houston native played all 60:00 in both games, both hard-fought 2-1 losses.
The honor is the first Big Ten weekly award for Penn State this year (coming on the first weekend of competition!).
Penn State is 0-2 on the year. The Nittany Lions are at St. Joseph’s on Friday, Sept. 6, and at Delaware on Sunday, Sept. 8, in their next outings.
