Janecke Hat-Trick Propels Women's Hockey to 10-1 Win Over Lindenwood

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's ice hockey team fired 10 goals in the Nittany Lions 10-1 victory over Lindenwood on Friday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Just 14 seconds into the first period, Tessa Janecke scored the opening goal of the game off a steal to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • Penn State added one more goal in the first period off the stick of Brianna Brooks with 8:28 remaining in the frame to put Penn State ahead 2-0.
  • The Nittany Lions came out firing in the second period adding four more goals to the total off the sticks of Janecke, with 15:09 remaining, Katelyn Roberts with 10:19 left in the period, Mya Vaslet with 8:18 remaining in the frame and a power-play goal by Roberts to give Penn State a 6-0 lead after two.
  • Stella Retrum then scored the first goal of the third period with 19:35 remaining in the frame to put Penn State ahead 7-0.
  • Lindenwood then scored on the power-play after a goal by Sarah Davies with 14:16 left in regulation to cut the Penn State lead to 7-1.
  • The Nittany Lions fired three unanswered goals including Janecke's third goal of the game coming short-handed with 10:59 remaining in the frame.
  • Maggie MacEachern and Maddy Christian each fired power-play goals in the period to secure the 10-1 victory. 

GOALTENDERS

  • Katie DeSa recorded her second straight victory in net allowing only one goal and stopping 20 shots. Her record improves to 2-1-0 on the season. 

STATS AND NOTES

  • Tessa Janecke's first goal broke the record for fastest goal scored to start a game scoring in just 14 seconds. Amy Petersen was the previous record holder as she did it in 29 seconds against Union in 2016.
  • Janecke recorded her third career hat-trick.
  • Penn State had seven goal scorers which is the most since Dec. 4, 2022, when Penn State scored 11 goals against Syracuse and also had seven goal scorers.
  • Katelyn Roberts tallied her first career multi-goal game.
  • Penn State scored the most goals against an opponent this season with 10.
