SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The No. 12/12 Penn State women's ice hockey team fired on all cylinders in the opening series against Union as they took game one of the series 4-2 on Friday night.

Seven Nittany Lions recorded at least one point while they attempted 34 shots on goal in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Taya MacDonald fed the puck to Katelyn Roberts in the Penn State defensive zone as Roberts then drove the puck to the left circle in the Nittany Lion offensive zone and fired the goal to give Penn State a 1-0 lead with 16:31 remaining in the first period.
  • Union would counter off a power-play goal by Stephanie Bourque as she took her shot from the middle of the offensive zone to tie the game up at 1-1 with 17:08 remaining in the period.
  • Later in the frame, Tiffany Hill attempted a shot on the goaltender, the puck bounced out to Alyssa Machado as she scored her first goal of the season to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead with 13:50 left in the period.
  • Union tied the game up again with 7:18 left in the frame as Karianne Engelbert skated passed two Nittany Lion defenders as she tipped the puck pasted Katie DeSa to even the game at 2-2.
  • Penn State had the final say in the period as Tessa Janecke fired her first goal of the game passed a group of defenders as she received the puck from Roberts and Machado to give the Nittany Lions a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
  • Janecke sealed the game with an empty net goal coming with 1:00 remaining in the game as she broke away after she was released from the penalty box and tapped in the puck to secure the 4-2 victory.

GOALTENDERS

  • Penn State goalie Katie DeSa had a light day making 11 saves on 13 shots attempted while holding Union to two goals. Her record improves to 3-2 on the season.
  • Union goalie Sophie Matsoukas tallied 30 saves on 33 shots fired as her record drops to 2-3 on the season.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Penn State fired 34 shots on goal while holding Union to only 13.
  • Janecke tallied two goals in the game to mark her third and fourth goals of the season.
  • The last time a Nittany Lion scored two goals in a game was when Roberts fired two goals against RIT on February 16, 2024.
  • Lyndie Lobdell, Roberts, Machado Tiffany Hill, and Janecke all had two points in the game.
  • Penn State went 0-4 on the power-play while Union went 1-3.
  • Grace Outwater recorded her first collegiate point with an assist in the win.
  • Penn State improves to 3-2 on the season while Union drops to 2-3 on the year.
  • The Nittany Lions currently lead the series against Union 10-5-2.
  • This is the first time this season Penn State has opened a series with a win.
