No. 12/12 Women's Hockey Secures Sweep Over Union with 5-3 Victory

Penn State fired three goals in the opening frame followed by back-to-back goals by Alyssa Machado in the third period.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The No. 12/12 Penn State women's ice hockey team completed the series sweep over Union on Saturday as they defeated the Garnet Chargers 5-3.  

Penn State fired three goals in the opening frame followed by back-to-back goals by Alyssa Machado in the third period.

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • Penn State opened the scoring off goal by Lyndie Lobdell in the offensive right circle as she received a pass by Machado putting the Nittany Lions ahead 1-0 with 15:34 remaining in the frame.
  • With 7:19 left in the first period, Nicole Hall would score her first collegiate goal as she was fed a pass by Tiffany Hill in the top right offensive zone circle and fired the shot while falling to her knees to put Penn State ahead 2-0.
  • Maddy Christian closed out the frame off a power-play goal that she punched passed the goalie as she received the pass from Grace Outwater while she in front of the netminder to put Penn State ahead 3-0 after one frame.
  • Union would score the lone goal in the second frame off a goal by Maddie Leaney as she slipped passed a Penn State defenseman and fired the shot to narrow the Penn State lead to 3-1 with 17:21 left in the period.
  • The Garnet Chargers cut the Nittany Lions lead to one off a goal by Leaney with 17:41 remaining as she went across ice and fired from behind the bottom circle to narrow the Penn State lead to 3-2.
  • With an extra attacker, Machado received a pass from Kendall Butze as Machado would shoot from the slot and score to put Penn State ahead 4-2 with 8:30 remaining in the third period.
  • 14 seconds later, Machado would score her second straight goal as she stole the puck away from the Union defender at center ice and drove the puck into the offensive zone and fired from the top circle and scored to put Penn State ahead 5-2 with 8:16 remaining in the frame.
  • With 4:09 left in the game, Karianne Englebert would score the final goal for the Garnet Chargers as she received a pair of passes before shooting from the bottom circle to result in the 5-3 Nittany Lion victory.

GOALTENDERS

  • Penn State goalie Lauren Barbro made her Nittany Lion debut making 22 saves on 25 shots attempted while holding Union to three goals. Her record improves to 1-0 on the season.
  • Union goalie Sophie Matsoukas tallied eight saves on 11 shots fired before getting pulled after the first period.
  • Union goalie Monja Wager played in the final two periods making 21 saves and allowing two goals. Her record drops to 0-1 on the year.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Penn State fired 35 shots on goal while holding Union to only 25.
  • Machado tallied three points off two goals and one assist.
  • The last time Machado had a three-point game came against Lindenwood on November 4, 2023, where she recorded three assists.
  • Nicole Hall tallied her first collegiate goal and first collegiate point.
  • Grace Tullock recorded her first collegiate point with an assist.
  • Penn State went 1-3 on the power-play while Union was held to 1-5 on the power-play.
  • Penn State improves to 4-2 on the season while Union drops to 2-4 on the year.
  • The Nittany Lions currently lead the series against Union 11-5-2.
  • This is the first time this season Penn State has swept a series.
  • Head coach Jeff Kampersal picked up his 450th career victory.
