Series Breakdown
THIS WEEK’S MATCHUP
- This weekend marks the seventh and eighth meetings all-time between Penn State and St. Lawrence with the Nittany Lions holding the 3-2-1 overall advantage including victories in the last two games played in the series up in the North Country by identical 4-1 scores, most recently one year ago.
- This marks the first two-game series between the two schools in Hockey Valley since the 2016-17 season where Penn State secured a 4-2 victory before The Saints captured the finale 6-3. The Nittany Lions are just 1-2-1 against St. Lawrence in Hockey Valley with series being held back-to-back years in 2015 and 2016 prior to this weekend’s matchup.
- Penn State is 8-3-1 all-time in home openers and 8-2-1 all-time in home openers played at Pegula Ice Arena including victories in three-straight. The Nittany Lions are outscoring their opponents 47-33 in home openers averaging 3.91 goals per game while only allowing 2.75.
- Penn State (21 years, 10 months) is the third youngest team in the Big Ten and 12th nationally while St. Lawrence (22 years 8 months) is the 16th oldest team in the nation and the fourth oldest team the Nittany Lions will face this year.
SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE
- The Saints finished last season 14-19-6 overall and 8-10-4 in the ECAC, however, they advanced all the way to the ECAC Championship game following a 3-0 victory over No. 6 Quinnipiac in the semifinals, but fell to No. 14 Cornell 3-1 to end their season. St. Lawrence enters the weekend coming off a sweep at Ferris State and is 4-2-0 so far this season. This weekend marks the first road games of the season for the Saints
- Lawrence’s eight-member senior class is tied for the third largest in the country and the Saints return 73 percent of their goal scoring from a season ago, the ninth highest percentage in the nation.
- The Saints return nine of their top-11 scorers from a season ago including each of the top-four led by Felikss Gavars who was the lone Saint with double-digit goals a year ago as he potted 13 to go with 12 assists for 25 points. Drake Burgin, Tomas Mazura and Mason Waite each chipped in with 20 points.
- Through the first six games of the 2024-25 season, St. Lawrence is paced by Greg Lapointe with a team-best five goals and three assists for eight points while Mazura has also added eight points on one goal and a team-high seven assists. Lapointe is tied for the national lead with five goals entering the weekend while his eight points are tied for fifth in the nation. Lapointe is coming off a five-point game including a hat-trick in an 8-0 win over Ferris State last Saturday. The senior is just one goal shy of his career-high six which he achieved each of the past two seasons and he has already matched his entire point total from 2023-24.
- Between the pipes this season Mason Kucenski has taken the reigns from Ben Kraws who started 36-of-39 games a season ago posting a 14-17-6 record with a .919 save percentage and a 2.49 goals-against average. Kucenski started just one game as a freshman last season, an 8-1 loss against Quinnipiac, but has started all six games this season posting a .930 save percentage and a 2.04 goals-against average early on. His .930 save percentage is tied for 21st nationally, but is the third-best among goaltenders with at least five games played.
- Lawrence leads the nation with eight powerplay goals through the opening three weeks of the season, however, that number is bolstered by a 6-for-8 showing on the man-advantage in last Saturday’s contest. The Saints scored four times on a major penalty late in the game to balloon the score. SLU is converting at 34.8 percent (8-for-23) on the man-advantage to rank fourth in the nation.
PHENOMENAL FINK
Sophomore Aiden Fink enters the weekend with points in each game this season including back-to-back multi-point efforts. Fink’s seven points rank second in the Big Ten and tied for 10th nationally while his 2.33 points per game production paces the conference and ranks second nationally. Fink’s six assists are also tied for the conference lead and tied for fifth in the nation.
SPECIAL SUCCESS
Penn State is one of nine teams and the lone Big Ten squad to be perfect on the penalty kill through the first three weeks of the season as the Nittany Lions are a perfect 16-for-16.
The Nittany Lion powerplay has also connected in back-to-back games and is 2-for-9 (22.2 percent) on the year to rank second in the Big Ten and tied for 16th in the nation.
OH DANNY BOY, DANNY BOY
Senior forward Danny Dzhaniyev, the shortest player in college hockey standing just 5’5” tall, set career-highs across the board last year finishing second on the team with 29 points including a team-best 20 assists.
Dzhaniyev ended the 2023-24 campaign with points in five-straight games to tie his career-best mark and has picked up right where he left off with points in each of the first three games, goals in two, this season to stretch his now new career-long point-streak to eight games.
GO SHORTY, IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY
The Nittany Lions are one of just four teams to score multiple shorthanded goals this season as both Braedon Ford and Dane Dowiak lit the lamp during the PK in back-to-back nights in Alaska to start the season. ASU and Michigan lead the nation with three shorty’s to Penn State’s two, UConn also has two shorthanded tallies this season.
The Alaska series marked the first time since the Three Rivers Classic in December 2015 that the Nittany Lions recorded shorthanded tallies in back-to-back games. Penn State had just one shorthanded goal last season and prior to the start of 2024-25 had registered just six shorty’s since the start of the 2019-20 season.
Penn State’s single-season record for shorthanded tallies came during the 2015-16 season when the Nittany Lions potted 12.
THE GOLDEN GOAL
Senior Simon Mack tallied the game-winning goal in overtime for the Nittany Lions in their season opener in Alaska marking the first OT win for Penn State in over a year dating back to a 2-1 victory against Ohio State during the Big Ten Quarterfinals on March 4, 2023.
Penn State went 0-1-3 during extra session contests last season collecting a pair of shootout victories and are 1-0-0 in such games through three games this season.
St. Lawrence is 2-0-0 in extra session contests this year as its opening game of the year, also on October 5, against RIT needed extra time as well as a game the following weekend against Niagara, the Saints won both scoring midway through each overtime period.
