COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 12/13 Penn State women’s ice hockey team dropped the opening game of the 2024 Women’s Ice Breaker Tournament to No. 11/12 Cornell, 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions fired 37 shots on goal but couldn’t find a shot to land in the back of the net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With 0:08 seconds remaining in the first period, Lily Delianedis received a feed from Ashley Messier from the right offensive circle and fired a goal passed the netminder Katie DeSa to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead.
- After a scoreless second period, Rose Dwyer launched a shot from the opposite end of the ice and the puck slid in the empty net with 0:44 seconds remaining in the game to give Cornell the 2-0 victory.
GOALTENDERS
- DeSa tallied 20 saves on 21 shots fired at her. Her record drops to 5-3-0 on the year.
- Cornell goalie Annelies Bergmann tallied 37 saves on 37 shots attempted for her first shutout win of the year. Her record improves to 1-1-1 on the year.
STATS AND NOTES
- Penn State drops to 6-3-0 on the year while Cornell improves to 1-1-1.
- The last time the Nittany Lions were shutout came on March 14, 2024 when Penn State fell to Saint Lawrence in overtime 1-0.
- The Nittany Lions went 0-3 on the power-play while Cornell was held to going 0-2 on the man-advantage. Penn State hasn’t scored a power-play game in six games this season.
- This is the second time Penn State has fallen by only one goal this season. The last time this happened was on October 4 when the Nittany Lions were edged by UConn 3-2.
- Cornell currently leads the all-time series 4-1-2.

The Nittany Lions return to action on Saturday, October 26 when they face the loser of the Ohio State/Stonehill game. The winner will take third place in the Ice Breaker Tournament. Game-time is set for 1 p.m.
